Ron Diorio was one of the first, and best, two-sports stars at New Haven College. Whether it was on the basketball hardwood or on the baseball diamond, Ron exhibited tremendous talents and was a major force in the success of those sports. In basketball, Ron scored 508 points in 57 games (8.9 avg.) and had 420 rebounds (7.4 avg.) while shooting 51% from the floor and 73% from the line. His senior year, 1968-69, the Chargers went 22-3 and competed in the NAIA Nationals in Kansas City. In baseball, Ron compiled a 24-1 regular season record on the mound with a 1.57 career earned-run average. In 1969, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, and later became the second Charger to appear in the major leagues. This man was a winner in every sense of the word, as is evident by the fact that seven of the eight teams on which he competed went into post-season play.
