Setter/Third Base & Pitcher

(1978-79 to 1981-82)

Inducted 1994

Cathy Chu excelled both on the volleyball court and the softball diamond, a rare athlete who achieved recognition in two sports.  She played volleyball for four years and helped the team to three post-season tournaments.  Chu was selected captain of the 1981 team, a squad which posted a school record 47 wins and became the first New Haven women's team to reach the national quarterfinals in any sport.  Chu also played two seasons as a pitcher and third baseman for the Charger softball team.  In her second year, she pitched a team-high 104 innings and recorded a team-best 3.63 ERA.  When she was not pitching, Chu excelled both in the field and at the plate.  She was ranked among the team leaders in batting average, extra base hits and fielding percentage.  Chu left the University of New Haven upon graduation but returned two years later to accept an assistant volleyball coaching position under Deborah Chin, where she remained for three seasons.
