The only thing harder than scoring runs off Dave Caiazzo was beating the righthander. Caiazzo registered six career shutouts, the second best total in UNH history, and won 22 of 24 decisions. These numbers become even more impressive when you consider Caiazzo accomplished this in only two years. A junior college transfer, he recorded an 11-1 record, three shutouts, 80 strikeouts and 2.89 ERA in 1976. His 11 wins ranked fourth among the nation’s leaders as he led the Chargers to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regionals. He followed that campaign with an indentical 11-1 slate in 1977, leading the team in wins, ERA (1.54), games pitched (13), strikeouts (62) and shutouts (3). Caiazzo helped New Haven to its second trip to the College World Series, where it finished fourth in the nation. After graduation, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
