Mike Ambrose ranks as one of the greatest distance runners in New Haven history. Whether it was on the cross country course or on the track, Ambrose was an intense performer who quickly earned the reputation as one of the finest runners in New England. He set school records in the 1500M (3:48.39), 5000M (14:28), 3000M (8:14.8), two miles (8:54.2) and the indoor mile (4:10.9) and still holds those records today. Ambrose was also a part of the record setting medley relay team (10:00.4), running the mile leg in 4:08. He earned honors from the ECAC in 1984 as well as spots on several Conference teams, including All-Eastern, All-New England, All-Connecticut and All-Regional teams. Even more impressive is the fact that Ambrose set records and won awards against competition from all NCAA Divisions. He was elected captain of the cross country and track teams during his career at UNH. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in Mechanical Engineering, Ambrose went on to capture four Connecticut TAC championships in various distances in addition to placing in the Fifth Avenue mile in New York City.
