The success of UNH women’s basketball can be traced back to many sources, most notably players like Cathy Alston.  She became New Haven’s first 1,000 point scorer and was the school’s leading scorer until 1987.  Alston finished her career with 1,310 points in 98 games for 13.4 career scoring average.  A natural scorer, Alston tallied 10 or more points in 20 games during her senior season, including four 20-point performances, and was the team’s leading scorer in 10 contests.  She led the team in scoring in each of her last three seasons, including a career-high 411 points in her sophomore season.  The guard earned a spot on the All-New England Collegiate Conference first team after averaging 12.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 1983-84.  The Chargers posted a school record 18 wins in her final season, a record which lasted until the 1987 season.  In addition to scoring, Alston ranks among UNH’s career leaders in assists (451) and steals (251).
