4+1 Pre-Education

The University of New Haven offers degree programs that lead to certification in Elementary or Secondary Education. Our unique 4+1 program allows students to obtain both a Bachelor's degree in their area of study and a Master of Science degree in Education.

Highlights of this program include:

  • A one-year (3 trimester), tuition-free Master's Degree through our internship program
  • Eligibility for Connecticut state teaching certification with an additional trimster of student teaching
  • Option for multiple certifications

The University of New Haven offers an innovative and cost effective way for students to become K-12 educator. Students can major in any subject area. During their first two years, students will take university core curriculum courses in addition to major specific courses. In the second or third year, students will begin the education component of their degree program and have the option of taking one or two Master's-level education courses in the fourth year.

In the fifth year, students participate in an internship at a school which not only offers them invaluable real-life experience but also allows them to obtain their Master’s degree in education tuition-free. At the conclusion of the 4+1 program, graduates will have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in their area of study, a Master’s degree in education, and Connecticut State Teaching Certification – all in 5 1/2 year!
