What to do if you get waitlisted

Due to the overwhelming number of applicants this year, it has been necessary to implement a waiting list for some applicants for the Fall 2010 Semester.  If you received a waiting list notice and want to find out the best way to still have the opportunity to attend the University of New Haven this fall, here are a few things that you can do that may better your chances:

Take Control

It's not just a passive waiting game.  There are things you can do to boost your chances of being accepted.

  • Get a better sense of your chances of admission.
    Contact the admissions office to find out why you were waitlisted.  Each student’s particular case is different.  Your admissions officer will be glad to tell you your status, and what you need to do in order to be taken off the waiting list.
  • Stay involved.
    Show admissions officers that you're committed to sports, clubs, and other community activities.

Be Proactive

Now is the time to step up and show us why you would be an excellent addition to our student body.

  • Study hard.
    This is no time to slack off or give up.  If you're wait-listed, you may be reevaluated based on your third- and fourth-quarter grades or by achieving higher scores on the ACT or SAT exams. 
  • Prepare to retake SAT/ACT Exam
    Consider attending an SAT or ACT prep class or course before retaking the exam.  We recommend visiting the following sites to help prepare for the SAT and or the ACT exam. 

Communicate

Be sure to remind us that you are interested in attending UNH.

  • Write a letter to the admissions office.
    Emphasize your strong desire to attend the college and make a case for why you're a good fit.  You can indicate that if accepted you'll enroll, but such a promise should be made only if you're absolutely certain.
  • Request an interview.
    An interview can give you a personal contact—someone who can check on the status of your application. If you live far away, we can even schedule web or phone interviews. You can schedule an interview on our website at www.newhaven.edu/interviews.
  • Realize that you've already achieved something.
    You were wait-listed, not simply turned away.  Once you have met the criteria set forth by your admissions officer, your waitlisted status may change to accepted.
