Body

UNH has nearly 100 majors and programs housed in four colleges — the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, and the Tagliatela College of Engineering. During each issue of Charger Connection we will profile one of the colleges. In this issue, we introduce you to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Introduction by Dr. Ron Nowaczyk, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

Welcome. The faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences are committed to working with each student to provide a first-class learning experience. Experience is the key word in the College. Our programs go beyond the classroom to include working in a faculty member’s lab or in the field; studying abroad, completing an internship, or engaging in projects that focus
on real issues.

Traditional Majors

Our traditional majors include Art (Digital and Animation), Biology, Chemistry, Communication, English, History, Mathematics, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and Theatre Arts. The College also offers advising in pre-professional areas including Education, Law, Medicine, and allied Health.

Unique Majors

Students may opt for concentrated majors such as Biotechnology, Dental Hygiene, Environmental Science, Global Studies, Graphic Design (Multimedia), Liberal Studies, Marine Biology, Music Industry, Music and Sound Recording, and Nutrition and Dietetics. The College also advises Undeclared Majors who are unsure of their major when entering UNH.

Experiential Education

Programs in the College of Arts and Sciences include learning not only by classroom instruction, but also by faculty-mentored research, student internships and cooperative education, study abroad, and field studies. The University of New Haven’s location offers opportunities for student internships and experiences in the College of Arts and Sciences both locally and in major cities like New York and Boston.

Facilities

Our facilities include Digital and Analog Recording Studios, Practice Sound Recording rooms, Music Ensemble and Music Practice facilities, a Communication Studio, Vlock Convergent Media Center, Radio Station, TV Control Room, Dental Center, Nutrition and Food Labs, Graphic and Interior Design facilities, Dodds Theatre and Seton Art Gallery.

Internship Opportunities

Our students have participated in internships at companies and organizations such as Mystic Aquarium, ESPN, MTV, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Universal Records, CNN, BET and the Discovery Channel.

E-Portfolio

Beginning in the freshman year, students work with faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences to develop an E-portfolio. This portfolio is developed over the four years at UNH and can be used when students apply for jobs after graduating from UNH.

First-semester Linked Courses

The College offers unique “linked courses” to first-semester Arts and Sciences majors as part of its commitment to enhancing the transition to college life. Students are enrolled in groups of 20 to two courses in their program (including a composition course) where the instructors work together to combine subject areas and assignments to foster student bonding and relate college material from different disciplines.

Living Learning Communities

The College of Arts and Sciences offers Living Learning Communities where students in the same major can live together in a first-year residence hall, take similar courses, and participate in group activities in the residence hall and off campus. Communities include students interested in the bachelors plus master’s education program, music industry and sound recording, interior design, and marine biology majors.

Study Abroad and Language

Along with traditional study abroad tracks, such as semester-long and year-long programs, the College of Arts and Sciences offers two-week intersession study abroad trips, in which groups of 10-15 students study with a UNH faculty member. During this time students have the opportunity to earn up to six credits toward their degree program. Recent trips have been to London, France, Dubai, Romania, China, Russia, Florence, Honduras, and Croatia. The College offers instruction in seven languages, including Chinese and Arabic, giving students the ability to make the most of their travels while studying in another country.
