English Language Requirement (TOEFL)

All non-native English language speakers must demonstrate English language competency by providing an IELTS score of 5.5 OR a TOEFL score of 70 on the internet based test (iBT)/ or 520 on the paper based test (PBT)/ or 190 on the computer based test (CBT). The University of New Haven School Code for TOEFL is 3663. The University of New Haven does not issue conditional I-20s for students seeking F-1 visa status even if they have been granted conditional acceptance*.

All graduate students seeking a master's degree whose iBT TOEFL scores range from 70 to 79 (or range from 190 to 213 CBT or range from 520 to 550 PBT) will be required to take an English language leveling course (E600) in their first term along with their other regular courses. In other words, if your iBT TOEFL score equals 70 or above, but is below 80, you will be required to take E600 in your first term along with your other regular courses.  Graduate students with IELTS scores that equal 5.5 but below 6.0, will also be required to take E600. For example, an applicant who has an iBT TOEFL score of 79 or an IELTS score of 5.5, would be required to take the E600 course during his/her first term at UNH.  The E 600 cannot be waived unless a TOEFL score of 80 or an IELTS score of 6.0 is presented to the International Graduate Admissions Office prior to your attendance.

* Important Note: UNH will offer conditional acceptance, in the form of a letter only not an I-20,  to those who are academically admissible but who need to improve their English language abilities before beginning academic course work. This means that if you have no TOEFL or IELTS scores or a low TOEFL (below 70) or IELTS score (below 5.5), you can still apply to the undergraduate or graduate degree program of your choice at UNH. If the Admissions Committee determines that your application meets all the requirements for admission except for the English language requirement, you will be granted "Conditional Acceptance".

Conditional Acceptance provides you with the assurance that once you have met the university's English language requirement, you will be allowed to begin your academic course work at UNH and will receive a UNH I-20. Conditionally accepted students may opt to apply for an English Training I-20 through ELS New Haven which will allow them to come to the U.S. to study English before starting their academic degree work at the University of New Haven.  Please see below for more information.

ELS New Haven: UNH is pleased to announce that ELS Language Center has opened a new branch here on the UNH campus. ELS/New Haven will offer Intensive English, Semi-intensive English and the America Explorer Programs.  For more information on ELS/New Haven and how to obtain an ELS I-20, please contact Elise Klein at EKlein@els.edu or call 203-931-2970.
