Other options for Financial Aid (in addition to Federal Aid) appear below.

Tuition Assistance Programs

Family Education Loan Program (FELP)
Family Education Loan Program (FELP) is a low-interest loan program administered by the Connecticut Higher Education Supplement Loan Authority (CHELSA). Students may borrow from $2,000 up to the total cost of education per academic year (less other financial aid received). Repayment can take up to 140 months with the option of paying interest only while in school. Applicants must be credit-worthy. For an application and further information, call 800-252-FELP (in Connecticut) or 203-522-0766.

Federal Stafford Student Loans
Federal Stafford Student Loans (formerly the Guaranteed Student Loan) are low-interest loans make by a lender such as a bank, credit union or savings and loan. Students may borrow up to $8,500 per academic year on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Repayment begins six months after graduation and can take up to 10 years. Applicants must submit a full financial aid application.

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
The Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is a program created by the Higher Education Amendments for students who do not qualify, in whole or in part, for subsidized Federal Stafford Loans. The terms for unsubsidized loans are the same as the terms for subsidized Federal Stafford Loans except that interest accrues while students are in school and during periods of deferment. The federal government does not pay the student’s interest. Monthly or quarterly payments may be made, or the student and the lender may agree to add interest to the principal of the loan (capitalization). Interest rates are variable. The total annual loan limit for subsidized and unsubsidized loans is $18,500. Applicants must submit a full financial aid application and be considered for a subsidized Federal Stafford Loan before an unsubsidized federal loan can be processed.

Interest-Free Monthly Payment Option
The Interest-Free Monthly Payment Option enables students to pay-as-they-go on a monthly basis; spreading education expenses over 10 manageable monthly payments. The Interest-Free Monthly Payment Option is not a loan, so there are no interest charges. It is available for an enrollment fee of $70 per year and includes Education Payment Life Insurance. UNH has partnered with Tuition Management Systems, a leader in the education payment industry, in order to offer students this option.

Federal Graduate Plus Loan:
Federal Graduate PLUS Loan is a low interest federally backed student loan, guaranteed by the US Government. Like its undergraduate counterpart, the Grad PLUS Loan can be used to pay for the total cost of education less any aid you've already been awarded. Also like the undergraduate version, eligibility for the Graduate PLUS Loan is largely dependent on the borrower's credit rating and history.

Private Student Loan (1 class only)
Students who are taking one course 3 credits only (such as in the HR Management Certificate program) are not be eligible to receive Title IV federal aid (for which you must be enrolled in 6 credits per term). However, they would be eligible to apply for a private student loan to a maximum of the 3 credit course cost ($1,890).

The private student lenders that will provide loan funds solely to support one class are:

Sallie Mae Signature Loan- 1-800-272-5543 or www.salliemae.com/newhaven (1 term only)
Wells Fargo Collegiate Loan- 1-800-658-3567 or www.wellsfargo.com
Teri Continuing Education Loan Program- (due earlier than the others- students should check terms carefully) 1-800-225-TERI or www.teri.org

Students should clearly inform the lender that they are seeking funds to attend below halftime status so that they are provided info about the correct loan.
