NEW LONDON, Conn. —The University of New Haven’s Southeastern Campus has offered degrees and certificates to working adult professionals in the region for more than three decades. For the past ten years, The satellite has made a name for itself with its convenient weekend and evening scheduling, and has continually reinvented itself to meet the demands of local working adults. The challenge of the new economy has not daunted the campus, but has instead allowed UNH Southeastern to once again meet the demands of the region’s workforce. The latest offering has been the expansion of its Master of Business Administration (or MBA) schedule options. The program has always been a popular choice in the area for current or aspiring managers looking to increase their skills and earning potential.Presently, however, because of the current economic climate, organizations across the region have been forced to shrink their tuition reimbursement for employees because of budget concerns and losses in profits. This in turn can threaten college enrollments as potential students shy away from taking on increased student loans during these tumultuous times.UNH Southeastern Campus has responded with new schedule options to offer something for everyone. The satellite’s original Saturday cohort still runs for just 22 months and is the quickest way to obtain a Master’s degree at the campus. The new offering of a Tuesday evening cohort runs just over 30 months and is still accelerated, but spread out over four calendar years to maximize company reimbursement policies and limit out-of-pocket expenses. Finally, a Spring 2010 cohort has been planned to run on Monday & Wednesday evenings and is completed in 24 months.“Although these are difficult times for many, recessions offer a rare opportunity to advance your career or completely change direction,” campus director Michelle Mason says, “the ones who take that opportunity will be ahead of the game when the economy starts to pick up the pace again.”UNH Southeastern Campus’ MBA programs are set up as a cohort, whereby the same group of students follows a set schedule and registers once for the entire program. Books are delivered to the students’ homes, and students are provided meals during class. Students pay online thereby avoiding lines at the Bursars office, and when they are ready to graduate, their cap and gown are delivered to the class for commencement ceremonies. The special cohort price is frozen throughout the two years, and includes all fees, books, meals and tuition costs. Additionally, all classes are offered in traditional classroom format, and active discussion and debate are encouraged. The cohort programs are available in their entirety in New London, and along with the Master of Business Administration, the campus offers other cohort programs including the Master of Science in Engineering Management, the Master of Arts in Industrial Organizational Psychology, the Master of Science in Professional Education, and the Master of Public Administration. Other programs include the Master of Science in Education, the Certificate in Project Management, and the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering for students with prior undergraduate credits. Applications are being accepted for Fall 2009 enrollment.
