  1. Mid-Terms This Week

It’s Monday, let the week begin! This is the final week before Spring Break, and like most college students, I will be preparing for a few mid-terms. I have a mid-term in Accounting on Wednesday and a mid-term on Thursday in Criminal Law. Thankfully half of my Accounting Mid-Term was take home, and my Arabic one is a take home as well. Today was a busy day due to work and classes, and also preparing for my interview for the RA position. Work always goes by pretty fast since my friends come by and visit. We shoot pool, play air hockey, and enjoy a few laughs. Getting your butt whooped in pool always makes those 4 hour shifts go very fast.

Later on this evening I had Gospel Choir. We meet every Monday from 7pm-9pm. We haven’t had it in a few weeks due to cancellations. Now I am studying for an Arabic quiz tomorrow on dictation of the vocabulary, and helping out my friend with his math homework.

Tomorrow is an especially busy day for me. My day will start at 8am for classes running till 10:50, and then I will go to practice for the play at 11:00 and then rush to my interview for Resident Assistant. My weeks are pretty busy due to everything I do, but I have learned to manage my time accordingly.

Well that is all for now, since I should probably get back to my studying. I will inform you all on how the rest of my week turns out!

  2. Ugh ... Midterms!

Hey, hey, hey everyone! What happened to spring!? It was so gorgeous the past couple of days, and now it is back to the silly snow/sleet/rain mix for today. Oh well. I guess I am upset because the nice weather was keeping my mind off mid terms, and now that I am stuck indoors they are all I can think about! I had my History midterm this morning (I hope it went well!) and I have another test tonight in intro to music. Booo……..

So I am a huge pop culture fan and more specifically a huge Britney Spears fan. I know what you are thinking, “really Shawn? Britney Spears? She hasn’t been good since… well…. Ever!” and I must disagree with you. Britney Spears is the greatest pop icon of our generation. No matter what she does people are still going to be interested in her life. That must be overwhelmingly awesome for her… she has to be doing something right, right?

Anywho…. I must be off for now. it is definitely dinner time and I am ridiculously hungry right now, but be sure to expect more really soon. I plan on posting a brief overview including what my normal day is like, so stay tuned!

    Bye!

  3. A long awaited update

Sorry I have been gone for a little while but I either wasn't in CT or swamped with school work, at work or tutuoring kids.

This weekend I finally had time off for myself. I was home!!! I love being home!! Being home makes me happy because I miss my friends, family and my animals! It was my friends birthday and we had a blast like always. I had a mini party for her at my house!! Then I just hung out with my little cousins and  relaxed! I had one of the best times I have had in a while, I can't even explain.

Now, I am back to doing the school thing again. Today is a pretty long day. I have class at 9:25 until 10:40 and then 12:15 - 1:30 and then 1:40 until 2:55. I had my stats class already and to my surpise I got a 94 on one of my assignments!! How I don't know but I am counting my lucky stars! I learned a lot today in that class. My other 2 classes are great. I get everything that is going on, it's just stats that gives me trobule sometimes.

On another note, I can't wait for it to get nice outside! I am sooo tired of the rain and having to put on a jacket. I am also pretty sure my car is tired of being dirty. I refuse to take it to get washed with this weather. Spring break starts on the 13 but I am leaving on the 12 because I don't have classes on Friday. I already put in my request to be off from work and I am already back on the work schedule in NY.

Anyway I have to go!!!  I'll write back soon!!!

Once again sorry for taking sooo long for an update!!!!

  4. From an International Perspective

    Hello Everybody,

My name is Ankit Sharma, I’m an international student at UNH and I am from India. I'm Finance (Business) major at UNH. Although my major is supposed to deal with the boring and intricate numbers and stuff, but the instructors at UNH make learning more fun, comprehendible and enjoyable.

I love University of New Haven and i would do anything to promote it and help people get acquainted with its beauty. So if you want to know about the crazy, beautiful and astonishing UNH check my blogs every week.

  5. Columbia Records, Rolling Stones, and a Snow Day

The best way to start off your week is definitely with a snow day! I'm sure many of you experienced that crazy blizzard last Monday. Being the nerd that I am, I didn't want classes to get cancelled because I didn't want to fall behind. But classes worked out fine, and I had a really fun day. I pretty much just ran around the building all day with my roommates, hanging out with our friends and making some new ones as well. Still, I'm really hopeful that that was the last we're going to see of the snow for awhile.

This week went very well for me. There was a guest speaker in my music business class, who was the head of promotion for Columbia Records for a long time, and worked with the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello and a lot of other amazing musicians. Pink Floyd loved this guy so much that they invited him to play one of their songs with them on stage at a show in London! So, you can only imagine the stories he had to tell. He gave us some great advice and I'm so glad that I got to hear him talk. What a great insight into the business, it's so cool that my teacher has such an awesome reputation that he can bring these people in to speak.

Next week I have four mid-terms, I can't believe it. I had maybe one at the most last semester, so I'm a little overwhelmed this time around. It isn't a huge deal though, because we're going to be rewarded with spring break when it's all finished! And even better, the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New Haven is on the 15th. The parade last year definitely ranks high on my favorite days of 2008, so I'm hoping that this year will top it. The campus bookstore has some great UNH irish clothing, I'm going to stop in this week and buy some. Being Irish is one of my favorite things.

So before we go crazy studying for mid-terms, we're celebrating my roommate's birthday this weekend. We've had a really fun weekend so far, and I of course opted to not go home this weekend. We're also about to select our housing for next year...I cannot WAIT to get that over with. The thing I dislike the most about college is probably when we have to choose housing because it can get really stressful. A word of advice, get all your roommates together early - it will make everything a whole lot easier!

  6. On my way out ...

Hello gentle readers! My name is Billy Fogarty and I’m currently a senior at the University of New Haven, staring graduation right in the face. I’m a forensic science major with a biology emphasis. I’m the oldest child of two retired Marines and have moved all over the country, starting with Arizona and finally settling outside of Baltimore. Because I moved so much, I had little to no trouble settling right in at UNH and making myself a new home. I’m here during a lot of breaks, especially summer, and work on campus doing a variety of things. of

I absolutely love my major and have a bit of disdain for the crime shows like NCIS, CSI, and the like that make it seem like such a glamorous and easy world. I don’t know what instruments or programs they’re using, but whatever they are, I wish our department could get some. Although I chose to go bio track with my degree, I’ve taken and am taking various criminalistics courses such as forensic microscopy, forensic odontology, and am in the conducting a research project and an independent study. I also recently applied and was approved to become a student affiliate in the criminalistics division of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences at the annual meeting this past February in Denver, Colorado. I attended with undergraduates, graduates, and some of the faculty and had an amazing time.

Outside of the forensic science department, I’m still fairly involved on campus. In high school, I was only involved in one or two extracurricular activities and definitely saw college as a way to get really involved and meet plenty of people. I’m the editor-in-chief of the Chariot Yearbook, a second-year resident assistant, a student tour guide, a summer orientation leader, am actively involved in our Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA), and I also sit on several committees across the campus. I do all of it because I love being involved and I absolutely love the university. It’s crazy to think that I’ve been here for almost four years and am currently on my way out.

Expect blogs to encompass the various “hats” I wear on campus, from USGA to Res Life to the amazing and fun insanity that is my major. And believe me, I tell it like it is.

  7. Experience UNH

Hello!!! My name is Shawn and I am excited to be a Charger Blogger!

I am currently a sophomore here at UNH, and I am studying Music Sound Recording and Business! I am one of many very active students on campus. I am a Resident Assistant (RA) for Dunham Hall (and upper- classmen resident hall) and I love it! I also work for the office of Student Activities; if you have been on a tour through Bartels (the student center) than you may have seen me working at the info desk. There are many activities that I enjoy here at UNH. For example, I am a big fan of using the Beckerman Recreational Center to unwind (especially during test time), and grab a smoothie to go. I attend a lot of SCOPE sponsored events too. SCOPE (student committee of planning events) plans trips off campus, bring comedians to campus, and host one of my favorite events, Bean house. Once a month SCOPE hosts a bean house in the student center which gives students and faculty the time and place to show UNH what they got! People bring all times of cool things to bean house; some people sing, some recite poetry, some do a comedic gig, and some just tell stories… It is always a good time (just bring friends)!

I will be brief today, and just end now by saying that UNH is an awesome school with a lot of great opportunities. I hope it turns out to be the school for you!

  8. Allow me to introduce myself

Hey everyone!! Thanks for checking out my blog! I’m new to this so please bear with me. A little bit about me first… My name is Melissa, but everyone calls me Missy. I’m originally from New Bedford, MA, about 2-2 ½ hours from UNH. I’m a forensic science major with a concentration in biology and minors in chemistry and criminal justice. Most importantly I’m only 3 months away from graduation!!

I guess I’m kind of in the same boat that a lot of you are in right now… not really sure what you’re going to do or where you’re going to go. It’s kind of scary, huh?! Let me tell you though, the past three and a half years at UNH have been great! I was a little scared at first, but I quickly learned that there is always someone with an answer or someone with a hand to lend around UNH. That scared and nervous feeling goes away pretty fast. I wish I could say the same about finding a job!!

I wish that when I was a freshman I could have heard all about the real struggles preparing for and after graduation. I know you may find it hard to relate to some of the things I’m going through now in my last semester, but I hope you all enjoy my blog and it helps you get through your next four years a little easier!

  9. The beginning of my story

I am Joshua Low, and at the moment I am a second semester freshman. I am from Middletown, New Jersey and boy is it a nice place. Contrary to the popular belief, Jersey is not exactly as its nick name ‘Dirty Jersey’ implies.  I actually live 5-10 minutes from the beach and not in an industrial wasteland. Most people have only been to North Jersey, and those places are bad there. But come down to central, even south Jersey. Appreciate the Jersey Shore.

I love to get involved because I like to make an impact and I have opportunities as my reward. I don’t care how much of an impact I make; I can either be a normal member of a club or be at the top of the E-board, as long as I can, it is good enough already. Getting involved also rewards me with opportunities, I get to meet new people and try many new things. It’s always a great feeling to know you impacted someone regardless of what you did.

I am over 12 extracurricular activities and I am active in all of them. I am on the Mock Trial team, I am an investigator for PIRO (Paranormal Investigators Research Association), a member of FSCC (Forensic Science and Chemistry Club), AFC (Ambassadors for Christ), ISA (International Students Association), Gaming Club, Anime Club, SCOPE (Student Committee of Planning Events), Victimology Club, Paintball Club, College Democrats and I also am a Charger Ambassador and the Executive Assistant (or Secretary for short) of my Bethel Hall Council.

Many have asked me, ‘How do you do that? How are you in this many clubs and not failing anything else?’ My answer to that is simple, time management. I always had a knack for organizing things and that has made me the time manager I am today. As for grades though, I can tell you that my grades are pretty good, although I do have to admit math still hates me. However, I can work on it, I will get better.

I am not only a school spirited person. Outside of school, I like to hang out with my friends and I like travelling around a lot, in addition to the typical video games and attempts for a daily gym run. I believe memories go a long way and this is why I also like to blog (I keep a daily blog somewhere on the web), take pictures (I like landscapes/scenery) and I play the piano, keyboards, xylophone, marimba and bells (can’t read music, no requests please: p).

These paragraphs here are only a beginning to the story that is my life at UNH. I will keep blogging, adding paragraphs, adding chapters. People will be able to read this story and at the end, when I graduate here. I can look at all I have done here and I will remember. There will be memories…

  10. My Introduction ...

Hey ya’ll, my name is Sue-Ellen Consolati. I am a freshman here this year at the University of New Haven. I am majoring in Criminal Justice-Investigative Services, with a possible minor in Arabic. I am about 2.5 hours away from my home in Braintree, Ma, which is right outside of Boston. Just a little tidbit about Braintree: the mall was actually the mall that they filmed some of the movie Mall Cop in.

I enjoy being away from home. Moving down here allowed me to start a new life pretty much. I knew no one coming here since most of my graduating class went to Massachusetts schools. This was my chance to make whole new friends, and also build a family down here since I will be away from mine. I chose to become very involved on campus.

Currently I am involved in the Admissions Team, the Gospel Choir, The Harmonies Choir, a job with Student Activities, LEAD, and the theatre department. I also recently applied to be an Resident Assistant for next year and have made it through the first two stages, my final stage, the interview portion, is scheduled for Tuesday March 10th. I am looking forward to excelling at my interview and getting the job, so I will continue to blog with my journey to become an RA. Also, I got casted in two of the Elm City Theatre productions this semester, which is the student run theatre program here at UNH, so I look forward to blogging about my progress through them and the excitement leading up to Opening Night! As for now, I am just trying to get through my week. I will blog again soon to tell you how my end of the week went! Talk to you soon!

  11. What a week!

This past week was so long! I handed in my podcast on Tuesday, I'm really proud of how it came out. Of course I forgot to put in the required 5-10 sound effects, but everything else about it was great so I'm not too worried. The next step is field production, which is when we go out and record our own videos. I'm going to use an old video of my Grandpa singing and then film my little cousins singing...they love to perform. My family is really excited to see the finished product.

We had a guest in Public Relations Writing who was a really great speaker. He's the head of PR and Marketing at a theater in Hartford, and gave us some really great insight into the business. I never really considered PR as something I wanted to do, but I'm definitely more interested in it now.

I also had a test in my music industry class, Production, Promotion and Distribution. It was on production, and I can safely say that I am glad I dropped from a music major to a minor. I'm not that interested in learning the technicalities of production, and am therefore somewhat confused by all of it. As a minor, I don't have to take any production classes other than this - and since it's only a third of what the class is about, it's not so bad. I'm glad that that test is over, hopefully the grade will be better than what I'm expecting.

This week shouldn't be too bad. Just a quiz on Friday in African American Images (I got an A- on the first one!), and various other assignments. Hopefully with a bit of extra time, I can get back to the gym, it's been a couple of weeks. I'm also going to work on compiling a list of community service activities, since I volunteered to head the community service committee of the Honors Student Council. The council just began this semester, it will be exciting to see it grow.

On a final note, the new issue of PULP is out, and can now be found at www.pulpcb.com . Enjoy!

  12. Much Needed

So at the beginning of the week I wasn’t feeling too optimistic.  Like my week started and by Monday night I was hoping for if to be Thursday night.  But I am so glad that I made it out alive, today wound up being one of the best days I’ve had in the last few weeks.  It started out with sleeping till 10:30am, getting dressed for my ORL Resident Assistant Re-Hire Interview, and then going to my interview.  I feel that my interview went extremely well, and it put me in a great mood that carried with me for the rest of the day.  Of course after that I had to finish editing my Physics Labs before class, but I was excited when the lab only took us an hour to complete.

OHH NOO FREE TIME!!! What was I to do?  How about grab some of my friends, and go shopping? Lol  It was only Target, but that is something.  I managed to spend almost $80 just on DVD’s for my room.  One of which being “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”  I don’t know if you have seen this movie, but I was laughing so hard.  I really needed a day of doing little to no homework, and just kicking back and enjoy the company of those around me.

One of the lessons we all must learn, sometimes you need to just stop and enjoy/embrace all that is around you.

  13. Is it Spring Break Yet?

So life has been absolutely hectic for me lately--I have a Midterm and a Test today with a final project draft due Thursday. I've been in the library most of the week so far pulling my hair out. My midterm and finals are so soon because I'm taking accelerated classes through University College; accelerated classes are five hours once a week for seven-eight weeks, so they are exactly half of a semester. I'm taking four, two first session and two second session, on top of another nine credits during the day, and it's been a rough road so far.

I have to put a LOT more work in this semester, which is understandable since it's my senior year. Spring Break cannot come soon enough! It's starting to get warmer every day, which is awesome because I am NOT the biggest fan of the cold.

I just want to say congratulations to all of those students who have been accepted for the Fall 2009 semester! Good luck and hope to see you in the fall!

  14. My Weekend and More

I hope everything is going well with all. Well, I actually got a break this weekend. I finally went home after work on Friday for my bestfriend's birthday. I made it to NY around 10 p.m. which was perfect timing because that was the time we were all suppose to meet up at the restaraunt. It was at least 16 of us and it was sooo much fun. I missed my friends from home. After that I finally got home at about 2 in the morning, it felt so good to be home!!!!!!!!! I missed my mom and my pets!!! I would say it felt good to sleep in my bed but I never made it there, I fell asleep on the couch with my dog watching tv =]. The next day I went to visit my dad, my cousins and my aunt. My dad made me a big pan of ziti and gave me a bunch of food to take back to school, I love my dad's ziti so that made me extra happy. I was going to come back to CT Sat night but once again I fell asleep in my cousins bed and by the time I woke up I didn't feel like driving. Sun, I got up early so I could drive back to CT because I had work at 12. I never made it there because I was not feeling well at all!! I hate calling out of work but I had to do what I had to do because I am sure I would not have been any help.

Now enough about the fun stuff, today is Monday so of course school is back ughhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I completely forgot I had a 5 page paper due on Tues, mainly because my planner was MIA (I found it over the weekend and brought it back) but now that I have it back I am back on track!! I also have a project due on Wed for statistics that my teacher assigned today because he wasn't here, I swear this man won't let us rest!!! I eat and sleep statistics. As much as I complain about this class it is one of the most beneficial classes I have ever been in. It's hard but worth it!!

Lately, I have found myself thinking more and more about graduation and I can't wait. Next May I am out of here!!! I love it here but I am ready for something else. School can be so stressful at times but in the end it will all be worth it!! After this I am going to grad school so I won't be getting that much of a break but a break nonetheless!!!

Anyway, I have to go. I have to start this 5 page paper I forgot about!! I still can't believe I did that but all that matters is that I hand it in and get a good grade! For some reason I work better when the pressure is on anyway but not this much pressure lol!!!

    Later days!!!!

  15. Senior Night for UNH Hockey

What is up on this Monday afternoon? What is up with this weather? Here in West Haven it has been going up and down for like a week now. One day it is really nice and you think that spring is on its way, and the next day it’s snowing again!

Friday night was the last game of the season / senior night for the UNH Hockey Team. The game ended in a 7-4 victory for the Chargers. It was probably the best game I have witnessed all season. There was tons of scoring, some heated exchanges between players, and of course, the fans were crazy cheering for the team.

Last week was also very busy in the Admission’s Office. A lot of high schools had February vacation last week, so we have a ton of prospective students visiting campus. Friday was also the Explore UNH day for Criminal Justice and National Security and the Enhanced Visit for Forensic Science. As an added bonus Dr. Henry Lee was here on campus! It was great to see him on campus, talking to students who are interested in the University of New Haven.

I have got some work to do; I need to get going on my research project so I can graduate on time. Hope everyone has a good day.

  16. My take on the Oscars

I'm watching the Oscars and actually enjoying them. The musical number with Beyonce was awesome, I love her...she always brings it 100%. We all knew Heath Ledger was going to win, and it was definitely well-deserved. I really liked how they got the reactions of a lot of people, it was nice. Will Smith was on stage for awhile and he is my all-time favorite actor; he needs to be nominated! Seven Pounds was one of the craziest movies I've ever seen. Ben Stiller was hilarious as Joaquin Phoenix, but it upsets me because "Walk the Line" is in my top 5 favorite movies. It's too bad he isn't going the musical way of Johnny Cash, that would be awesome. And finally, Seth Rogen and James Franco definitely had the best scene.

So we had a nice, short week last week. I'm really enjoying my African American Images class, mostly because the teachers aren't afraid to talk about the taboo subjects and I feel I can be open with them, as well as my classmates. Since it's an honors class, it's very small, but I like it that way. I really encourage all the freshman and those still in high school to work hard so that you can be asked to apply to the honors program, and can take these great classes. I think I'm going to get a lot out of the class, and it will look great on my transcript for law school (or grad school, it's too soon to tell).

My podcast for TV Production is due on Tuesday, tomorrow night I'm going to be finishing up. It's about my Grandpa and I'm really excited to share it with my family. By the end of the semester, we have to have a movie made and mine is going to be all about him. It will be around a year since he died when I finish it, so I think it will be a really nice thing for my family to have. Hopefully my Grandpa can get me an A, too :)

Well, I'm off to watch the rest of the Oscars. Everyone should go get Lily Allen's new CD, it's really good. She gets a lot of bad press but what it comes down to is her music, and the album is a lot of fun. Also...my Britney concert is just over a month away. Yay!

  17. I Think I Really Forgot To Breathe!

You know when you just have one of those weeks where you are running around crazy, doing everything, and you forget to just stop and breathe?  Wow that has been the last 2 weeks for me, I’m beat.  Like don’t get me wrong, I love being busy lol, but this has been nuts.  I must say that I have impressed myself that I was able to get everything done.  Talk about time management to the max.  Unfortunately the “fun” isn’t over yet.  I need to just make it through Tuesday and I’ll be set.  I have my first Organic Chemistry Test this semester and not gonna lie I’m a bit nervous.  I think I am just gonna spend all of the weekend with my head in the textbook and my notes until all I can see are reaction schemes.  Anyone out there good at Organic??? =)

But besides that I am excited about this weekend because I am going home to get some Ice Rescue Training.  As you all probably don’t know, I am a Rescue Diver back at home.  So this should be some good fun, and then after training I can study =P.

No worries, I’ll pull through in the end somehow.

    Is it Summer Yet???

  18. My Return

    Hey all,

I apologize for being gone for a little while, things have gotten very hectic. If it is not one thing it is another but hey I can't really complain.

So whats been going on with me, well, mainly school, work and a lot of volunteer work with children. I love kids!!!! Work has been okay, a little so, but nonetheless okay. Something is better than nothing anyday!

Now can we talk about Chris Brown and Rihanna!!! I don't know how to feel. I never support a man putting his hands on a woman but from what reports and family and friends are saying she almost deserved it! But it's really not any of our business what is going on in their relationship! Talk about no privacy!!!

On another note, I hope everyone had a great Valentine's day because I surely did. I loved the presents my mommy and daddy sent me!!!! Oh yeah, I loved the stuff my boyfriend gave me too lol (don't want to exclude him)!!!! The 3 day weekend was way too short, I wish it was longer but then again who doesn't. Who is ever ready to get back to school and start waking up early for classes. Well class is ending right now so I have to go! Shame on me for blogging during class!!

    Later days guys

  19. The Grammy's, Chris Brown, and the Puppy Patch

I'm home now, sitting in my nice big bed. I've missed it here, mostly for the food - my mom ordered from my favorite pizza place tonight and she's making these ham and cheese rolls that I LOVE. My dog has not missed me as much as I've missed her (like always). The house smells like a bakery now since we're having a party on Sunday for the race.

There's that quote from the movie Juno that I think really sums up how I feel about home. "I never realized how much I like being home unless I've been somewhere really different for awhile." It's so true, and I love being able to come back fairly often. I was worried in that UNH was too close to home, and I always thought that people who stayed relatively close to home for school were not going to be as successful. I'm so glad I've been proven wrong. At this point in my life, I don't like to be away for so long.

I think I say in every blog that I've had a crazy week. It's true, though. But I like to be busy, and classes definitely keep me that way. Even when I was watching the Grammy's, I was taking notes for a PULP article. I am so happy that Blink 182 is officially back...summer 2009 is going to be fantastic. I also bought the new Lily Allen CD and I absolutely love it. She gets a lot of bad press but I think she's amazing.

Chris Brown is a major jerk, just saying.

This weekend is going to be mostly relaxing, I hope. I have some homework to do...whether it will get done, who knows. I'm meeting friends for lunch tomorrow and then we're going to this place called the Puppy Patch. As you might imagine, it's a store where the puppies pretty much roam free. I love it there. My boyfriend is coming over after work to celebrate our third Valentine's Day together (third, that's crazy) and spend some quality time since we have Monday off.

I really dread the days when I have to get a real job and don't get long breaks anymore.

  20. We're #1 ... in the world!

Since I would have been bored out of my mind at home this winter break, I convinced my bosses at my on campus job that it would be a really great idea to keep me here over break so I could work and be productive. After a few weeks of work I saw that UNH was offering a Management course that would help me complete my major a little bit early and I jumped at the opportunity.

MG 454 was a global business simulation course that was held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for two weekends. The class divided was divided into four teams of two to three people, and we were all top level executives at competing digital camera companies. We played for eight years, and after each year progress was evaluated through the game and scores were posted. Hundreds of decisions had to be made for each year based upon decisions we had to make given our market share in various regions, cost of production, advertising, debt payoff capability, credit, and numerous other factors. Making the decisions for the year could take up as much as two hours of our time, and sometimes we were put under time constraints.

On top of strategizing on how we could increase revenues and profits by ten percent per year, we also had to figure out how to crush our competition. We were allowed a few practice years before we had to go in it for real. Our professor, Dr. Abbas Nadim, guided us through the first few years, helping us when he could, but after the first weekend we were on our own to make or break. My co-manager Brandon and I were able to get a quick handle of the simulation and managed to remain number one throughout the whole game. Much to our pleasant surprise we found out that we were number one in the whole world ! Countless countries, universities and managerial teams were all competing right along with us, and we beat 'em all!

All in all, this was the best course I have taken so far. It integrated everything I have been learning over the past few years, and it was an amazing way to learn how to take risks and make huge decisions at no out-of-pocket expense!

  21. Top 5 NFL Players

It’s been a crazy week. I had to go pick up my Petition for Graduation, so once that gets signed and approved I am all set to graduate in May. I had my first quiz of the semester this past Wednesday, needless to say, I feel confident that I did well on it. President’s Day is Monday; therefore, there are no classes. Nice, I know. So, I’m heading home for the weekend. Tomorrow is Friday the 13th. I am not going to see the Jason movie. I don’t do horror movies. I hate them. Saturday is Valentine’s Day. For the first time in 3 years I will not be celebrating it with my girlfriend because we are both heading home for the long weekend. Sunday is the Daytona 500, which is another sign that spring is on the way. My pick to win the race is Jeff Gordon; he is also my pick for the Championship this year. Hopefully NASCAR will help me forget about football. But, as promised last week, I will choose the 5 players to watch out for next football season. Again, these players are not chosen by any scientific method, or with an expert opinion beyond them. Basically I’m going on a hunch, which any analyst on TV does anyways.

    1. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots: Number 12 is coming off his knee injuries and is expected to be back in form in time for the start of next season. Hopefully there aren’t any more infections. But just in case…

1A. Matt Cassel, QB, New England Patriots: Cassel showed a lot of potential last season, but a lot of critics said it was the New England system that made him successful. Cassel’s $14.65 Million for 1 year contract is an awfully expensive insurance policy in case Brady isn’t ready in time.

    2. Aaron Rogers, QB, Green Bay Packers: Gotta stick with the quarterbacks so far. He had a great year as a full-time starter. Aaron still has to shake the shadow of number 4 though, with Favre’s recent “retirement” announcement it should be easier this season for Rogers, but he is gonna need some help on defense.

    3. Marion Barber, RB, Dallas Cowboys: He was injured most of the season. Let’s see what the Cowboys can do with a healthy backfield.

    4. Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals: I bet he is hoping and praying that Kurt Warner comes back to play next season. Without a doubt, Fitzgerald is the best receiver in the game today, and he proved in the playoffs this past season, but his success rests in Warner’s hands.

    5. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints: I started with the QBs, so I gotta finish with them. He was within a few yards of breaking Dan Marino’s record for passing yards in a season. He is legit, and on a great team. Let’s see what he can do next season. I expect a lot of Brees.

So, that’s all I got for today, enjoy the holiday weekend!

  22. A great college town.

I really hate this cold weather, and I'm so relieved that the temperature is finally going up. I will say that I love the small campus of UNH for the community feeling and class sizes, but right now I mostly love it because it doesn't take long to get from one place to another. If I had to go to classes on a campus any bigger, I would have probably died of frost bite this past week. I might be exaggerating a little, but you get the point.

The second week of classes was crazy, I haven't been so tired in a long time. The workload is bigger but I don't mind it so much yet. One of my homework assignments is to script a podcast, how cool is that? I also had to watch a silent movie for my honors class, and it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...I really got into it in the second half.

Friday night was a lot of fun. Then My friends from Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University came here, and we took the shuttle to downtown New Haven. We met up with our friends from Quinnipiac and went out to eat. I loved seeing all of my friends from home and it was so easy, I don't know why we don't do it more often. After last night we all decided that we should meet up at least once a month.

Now I am relaxing in my room, most of my roommates are away for the weekend visiting friends. I just finished writing an article for the next issue of PULP and I am actually going to an art show in New London in a few hours. It's called the Hygienic Art Show and they have it every year at this time, and this is the 30th year. I'm covering it for PULP and I'm sure it will be really interesting so that will be fun, something different.

Tomorrow night is the Grammy Awards, I'm really excited for those. Blink 182 is coming together to present an award, and now there are talks of a new album. I'm so happy about it, Blink is one of my all time favorite bands. I didn't jump on that bandwagon until my sophmore year of high school, though, so I never got to see them live because it was about the time that they broke up. It would be so amazing if they did a tour - I can't wait to see what happens!

  23. Back to the daily grind, as they say.

We’re about a week and a half back into the semester, and I am sooo glad to be back. Our six week break sounds good in theory, but when you’re away from all of your friends snowed in at your house (as opposed to your dorm), it can get a bit dull. This year I stayed on campus almost all break, working for Admissions and taking a management course. It was a really great way  to make some money and earn some credit.

Perhaps the worst thing about being back is going to classes—not sitting in them, per say, but actually walking to them in the crazy weather we’ve been having is really doing a number on my shoes. Winter is my least favorite season, so I wasn’t too happy when Punxatawney Phil saw his shadow the other day. My family is moving to Florida and I cannot wait to get out of the cold weather!

    Gotta finish some homework—Later!

  24. The 5 Worst Super Bowls Ever

What’s going on? I’m still having a Super Bowl hangover, and I still want more Springsteen. I am not ready for the football season to be over. Although, no football means spring is coming, and with that, there is 107 days until graduation! Tuesday night was the class of 2009’s Senior Night. Basically, we rented out the back room of The Playwright, a bar in downtown New Haven. We had a buffet dinner and drink specials all night. We even had Dwayne Wade from KC 101, a radio station here in CT, DJ the entire night. It was a great time for all the seniors that attended. To make the night even better it was my 22nd birthday on Wednesday. It was great to spend my birthday with all of my friends.

So, as promised, I said I would give my 5 worst Super Bowls, which I’ve seen witnessed in my lifetime. This could be a slight cure for Super Bowl hangovers. Again, I’ll admit it is very biased.

    1. Super Bowl XLII: New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14. The only person I hate more than the Manning brothers is David Tyree. Damn him and that catch.

    2. Super Bowl XLI: Indianapolis Colts 29, Chicago Bears 17. If you remember correctly, the Bears returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and it gave me a lot of hope that the Bears would upset Manning and Colts. My first of three straight disappointments.

    3. Super Bowl XXXI: Green Bay Packers 35, New England Patriots 21. Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe with that cannon arm. Their first and only Super Bowl appearance together in New England. Of course, Bledsoe would go to another Super Bowl, but as Tom Brady’s backup. Parcells still hasn’t been that lucky since leaving for the Jets, then the Cowboys, and now the Dolphins.

    4. XXXVII: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48, Oakland Raiders 21. A battle of the Pirates, also Coach Gruden’s new team vs. his old team. Look where he is now. Anyways, the Bucs won in a landslide towards the end, they more than doubled the Raiders score. I really don’t like lopsided games, especially Championship games. Unless the Patriots are playing in it.

    5. Super Bowl XXXV: Baltimore Ravens 34, New York Giants 7. I wasn’t rooting for the Giants in this one, because I would never do that. But again, lopsided victory. But Kerry Collins was the QB of the Giants. What happened? Where did he go and then pop up again with the Titans this season?

So there it is. The worst 5 Super Bowls in my lifetime. My weekend officially starts now. Have a great one everyone. I’ll talk to you later.

  25. One Week Down

So we’ve been back for about a week and it has been surreal.  Two months was just too long to be away from everyone, and ten days later it feels like we had never left.  Having our movie nights, going to dinner, and unfortunately going to class together.  And I’ll admit I slacked on working out while I was home, and now being back here having my friends to run next to me on the treadmills makes the exercise that much more enjoyable.

This semester looks like it is going to be an exciting adventure, and I am glad I have you guys by my side.  Classes look like they may have their rough patches, but I’m not worried =).  We’ve got so much other stuff to look forward to, and after this semester we are halfway to graduation!!!  I know scary thought.

What things are you looking forward to this semester?

  26. And We're Back!

What’s going on everyone? It’s been awhile since I’ve written one of these. After a long winter break, everyone is back on campus. It feels great to be back in West Haven, especially since this is my last semester here! I’m sure everyone’s holiday was busy, but mine was really busy because over winter break I completed my internship which is required to graduate from UNH. I did my internship with the East Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office in East Hartford, Connecticut, and I basically worked a full time job the entire break to complete the 150 hours that are required.

One of the great things about doing an internship is that you gain the real-world experience that goes along with the University’s Experiential Education. It was a great experience and I’m glad I had that before graduation.

Since being back on campus a very special event occurred. This past Sunday was Super Bowl XLIII. Now, I don’t know how many of you like football, but I love it. I mean, really really love football. If I weren’t a Fire Science major, I would probably be a Sports Industry major. And I would love to have the opportunity to coach. With that said, Super Bowl XLIII was probably one of the best Super Bowls I have ever watched live. Definitely in my top 5 (and definitely biased):

    1. Super Bowl XXXVI: New England Patriots 20, St. Louis Rams 17. Sorry Kurt Warner, this is your first agonizing loss in the Super Bowl. Tom Brady was the MVP coming out of obscurity, stealing the starting position from Drew Bledsoe. First of three rings for Tom, first of two MVPs. I love the Patriots, did I ever mention that?

    2. Super Bowl XXXVIII: New England Patriots 32, Carolina Panthers 29. Two is twice as nice. Adam Vinateri comes out and kicks yet another game winning field goal.

    3. Super Bowl XXXIX: New England Patriots 24, Philadelphia Eagles 21. Ok, how many times is Adam Vinateri going to do this game winning field goal thing? 3 times is crazy clutch. Best big game kicker in the league. Why did we ever get rid of him?! Despite Team Obliterator (Terrell Owens) actually showing up and having a huge game, New England hung on and won. The MVP went to Deion Branch who had a bigger game than T.O. and still he left for…Seattle?

    4. Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers 27, Arizona Cardinals 23. Wow, what can I say? The first half was quite literally the worst half of football I have ever seen. The entire time I was yelling “Throw it to Fitzgerald!” I had all my eggs in the Arizona basket. The only thing to take away from the first half is Harrison’s pick-six on Warner. I mean a 100 yard interception return for a linebacker? Amazing. * Side note* The absolute best half-time show ever! Bruce Springsteen. Simply amazing, and a million times better than Aerosmith/N’Sync/Britney Spears. Whoever thought of that combo should be shot in the face. With the exception of Prince, the half-time shows have been better since the little wardrobe malfunction of a few years ago. But, anyways…Second half – Still no life in Arizona. The third quarter stunk it up big time. But, something happened in the fourth quarter. Arizona finally did something, and guess what it was…THEY THREW IT TO FITZGERALD. I mean he was only the best wide receiver in the league this year, and his 30 receptions, 546 yards and 7 touchdowns in a single playoff are better than Jerry Rice’s numbers. He is crazy good. And that 60-something yard catch and run gave me hope. Hope, that for a third year, my pick for the Super Bowl wouldn’t lose. Hope, that finally my three-year slump is over. It happened with the Bears after they lost to the Colts. Perfection was lost last year. Then, Ben Rothlisberger and Santonio Holmes did it to me this year. It was David Tyree all over again. I was heartbroken. I felt bad for Kurt Warner, who put up monster numbers (that pick-six in the first half killed him) and still lost. Which brings me to my next point. Never go back on the puppy promise.

    5. Super Bowl XXXIV: St. Louis Rams 23, Tennessee Titans 16. The first of Kurt Warner’s 3 Super Bowl appearances. He was the first QB to come out and win from nowhere. Everyone remembers that Titans player getting tackled and stretching to no avail on the last play of the game on the 1-yard line.

There it is, my top 5 Super Bowls. I gotta get going to do some homework, but eventually I will talk about the 5 worst Super Bowls I have seen, the 5 teams to watch out for next season, with a player from each team to especially watch out for, 5 dark horse teams, and 5 teams you should ignore next season. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll do a little research and figure out which 5 players of this year’s draft class will actually do something in the NFL.

  27. My weekend

What a week it has been! Syllabus week is out of the way and now it's time to get to work. I am actually home right now to pick up some textbooks and see family since I'm missing my cousin's birthday party tomorrow (to work at open house, of course). Come dinner time, though, I'm sure I'll be back at school to gear up for a fun night and a very early morning.

The rest of my classes went really well. I had TV Production on Tuesday and I'm so excited for it, but also nervous...I've never done anything like what I'll be doing in that class. By the end of the semester, I'll have a ten minute movie made. I need a concept for it on Tuesday and I'm lost for ideas, so hopefully I'll come up with something on time.

Wednesday turned out to be a snow day, so all I did was sleep. Then Thursday I worked in the Admissions Office all day, and went to my music industry class at night. The class is Production, Promotion and Distribution, and it's with the same teacher I had last semester for Intro to Music Industry. I think the class will go well and there is a lot to learn from my teacher since he has so much industry experience.

Thursday night we went to downtown New Haven along with what seemed like the rest of the school. It was a fun night, we ended with getting some amazing pizza down the street from the club, and I came back and visited with some friends I hadn't seen yet. Friday morning I had my honors class at 11:15, it's African Amercians in Literature and Film. I'm mostly excited that it's half film, and there are only six other students in my class! We have two teachers; both come with very different perspectives but really seem to bring out the best in each other so I think it will be a great class.

I definitely think this semester will be the most challenging yet, as it should be. I started some  homework last night and have some reading to finish for Monday. But right now, I'm just waiting for my laundry to dry and relaxing before heading back to my crazy dorm for what I'm sure will be an interesting Saturday night...I do love the first weekend back.

  28. The first weekend back

Well, the weekend is finally here!

I am rather excited! My weekend kind of starts on Thursday because I do not have classes on Friday! I love not having classes on Friday!!!

On Friday, I worked in admissions and helped get some things ready for open house, went to the gym and of course work! Now, today I am going to do the same thing again minus the gym. I don't have any homework at all, I just need to order my books! I can't believe I am about to say this but I am actually looking forward to doing homework probably because I just want to use my new lap top lol =]!

On a fun note, I am contemplating whether or not I should go to the club. I haven't been out since I been back, I guess I have to see how I feel after work! Well I am about to get dressed and begin my day!
    Later days!!!

  29. Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

In our busy lives, we forget to take the time to really appreciate the little things in life.  We are all concerned with getting ahead, we forget to look back and reminisce about things that once brought us so much joy.  I know for me, I always get caught up in school and stuff like that that I never take the time to understand and embrace the things that truly make me smile.

I feel we need to live our lives by taking two steps forward and one step back.  We shouldn’t be afraid to act like a kid again, or slow down our lives.  I want to go back to the days where it would be Saturday morning and I would find the biggest bowl I could to make cereal and watch cartoons.

Okay Okay so that was last Saturday but still.  We need to make sure you take a look at these simple things that can bring us so much joy.  I cannot wait till the weather gets warmer so I can lay out on the quad, turf field, or beach.  Take the time to breathe and enjoy life in the slow lane.  Even at night to do the same and just stare up at the stars.

What is the small thing you do to appreciate life?

  30. I got in the honors program!

And we're back...I did a lotttt today. I woke up and had Intercultural Communications at 9:25, it seems like it will be really interesting at the very least. I had a little break after that and hung around with my roommates, and then had Public Relations Writing at 12:15. For that class, I have the same teacher as I did for media writing last semester and I really like her so I know the class will be good. I had another break so I went to the gym and cleaned up my room a bit (it's already a mess). When 4:30 finally rolled around I went to Persuasive Communication, which seems like it will be the most challenging. We're going to have debates a LOT and have one day to research it all, and then the next class will be the debate. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I met my roommates for dinner in the New Hall cafe and now we're all back here getting ready to go to a friend's house off-campus. It's been nice seeing everyone but I didn't get to really hang out last night with unpacking and an early class. I probably won't be out too late either, since I want to get up semi-early tomorrow. I have Production Fundamentals at 12:15 but I want to get up for breakfast and some gym time.

Some good news: I got into the honors program! I got an e-mail at the end of last semester with the invitation to apply because they had spots open and so I figured, why not? I'm really excited that I got in because I have worked really hard. Now I'm taking an honors class on Fridays at 11:15, it's African Americans in Film and Literature. You have to take four honors seminars to graduate with honors so I'll have a semester free...most students get in before freshman year so I'm a little behind schedule.

The newest issue of PULP is out so go read it! http://pulp.chargerbulletin.com/

The rest of the week will just be getting used to my new classes, working and getting back into the swing of things. Open House is on Sunday, we hope to see plenty of you there! I am dreading that night though, I soooo desperately hate the Superbowl. Hopefully something fun will be going on that won't require me to lock myself in my room, though I'm sure the boys who live above me will be jumping up and down to let me know it's still going on.

    Oh well, talk soon!
