  1. Take 3 in Bartels

For those of you who go here at UNH, Take 3 is probably the highlight of your lunch everyday, but for those of you who don't go here, well, i will acquaint you with the magical world of Take 3. Take 3 is like a small subsection of Bartels, in a way it is like a small restaurant. Everyday Take 3 brings us different food items, thanks to the well organized and intelligent people at Sodexho. The food items are associated with a particular country, every week they change the countries they associate the delicious food with. It is India one week, China the other and Mexico after. I like the peace and serenity one feels inside Take 3, away from the loud and sometimes boisterous noises of the students in UNH. It is like a world of its own, there are the well mannered and interesting faculty members enjoying different food items and then there are UNH kids catching up with each other. Take 3 is one crowd pleaser and its attracts each and every person at UNH. The food is well garnished, tasty and enjoyable and the waiters are friendly, ready to serve anyone and also make an effort to remember names of people who stop by on a regular basis. Take 3 has added on to the beauty and elegance of UNH and it certainly is here to stay forever and ever.

  2. Shipping up to Boston!

So this week has proven to be very exciting! On Tuesday I received an email informing me that I’m going to be an RA next year!!! I’m so excited! I’ll be the Resident Assistant of the Music LLC in Botwinik Hall. Free, single room!

And at the moment, I’m chillin’ in a hotel room in Boston. The Annual National MEISA conference is this weekend at the Berklee College of Music. Music Industry Professionals from all over, and other MEISA members are joining together to meet, and learn a heck of a lot about the music industry. It looks like it’s going to be a jam-packed weekend. However, it didn’t exactly start off on the right foot. . .

To start the trip off, our bus driver got lost. We had to be on Soldiers Field Rd. . . but his GPS directed us to Beacon St, which is much closer to Berklee, but not even remotely close to the hotel. Anyways, after a frantic call to the hotel, we safely arrived and checked into our rooms and whatnot.

Once we got hear and I checked the MEISA email, I found an email telling us that our show planned for April 1st, our first Rave, was cancelled because the paperwork wasn’t handed in on time. Awesome. I can’t wait until the rest of the executive board finds out! Hopefully it will work out just like the Queers show worked out. Keep your fingers crossed???? Thanks! :o)

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow and Saturday, and the events at Berklee. I love Boston! And I’m so excited for this conference!

That’s all for now, stay sweet and keep on rockin’!

  3. Exams and Job Searches

Wow it was a long week back!! Sorry for the update being so late, but I have had a crazy week! After I got back to CT from Spring Break, it was full steam ahead on my thesis…I did manage to finish twelve pages though!! Then after I was done with that, I had to start studying for an exam I had yesterday. Now I need to start studying for an exam I have next Wednesday!! Gosh, I swear it never ends…haha. I like it though, I love to keep busy. Now that graduation is just two months away, it’s just going to keep getting busier too!

The Class of 2009 officers meet every Wednesday, and yesterday’s meeting was really productive. Every year the senior class gives a gift to the school, sort of our way to say thanks for everything. We have a great idea, and I wish I could tell you what it is, but I don’t want to say anything until we get it approved. As soon as we do though, I’m sure I’ll be writing about it. I think it’s going to be really great for future students and give them a super awesome place to hang out outside :-)

As far as a job search goes, we went over how to find jobs in the forensic science field on Monday, and I mailed in my resume to the MA state crime lab (that’s where I would like to work someday) so keep your fingers crossed for me! I also think I’m going to apply to be a substitute teacher in some towns near where I live. I got involved in a really great program last year, and it made me realize that I really enjoying helping people learn. I’ve got to do some reading for instrumental before I can start doing homework and studying, but I’ll be sure to tell you a little more about that awesome program next time!!

  5. A Wonderous Tuesday

So I managed to wake up today at 7am. It was good and I wasn't late to CJ. I ran to the library and printed lots of stuff (free printing w00t)and then ran there to CJ after grabbing breakfast.

Professor Lawlor was talking about the midterm and how it would be handed back thursday, then for the rest of class, all he did was skim through the next chapter about entrapment, insanity and other affirmative defenses. It was quite entertaining and now I am hoping for a not-so-bad grade on the midterm, just because its worth like 25% of my grade and if I do bad on it, I may fail.

Then I ran off to English and handed in my paper. I was also handed back additional papers from Professor Asmus. Well then we all went over the poetry we read for today and we were handed play tickets to Old Man and the Sea and on a later date to Death of a Salesman for an extra credit play review. Yes we get free tickets to see plays at Yale and Long Wharf Theater, its covered by the class when you enroll and its extra credit and like the professor said, it’s a cheap date, because not all tickets on every one of the dates are taken and it is quite possible to get 2 tickets for one play on one night.

After that I ran off to biology and I actually paid attention and didn't fall asleep today. Anyways, professor did questions, gave me a question about 'Why do people twitch' then he made a lecture on muscles and all about them.  It was a very nice class, I liked it very much.

Then it was a nice little break. I chilled until my 1:30 appointment with Becca Kitchell at ORL to discuss my rejected RA application. So I went to it and boy was I shocked at the reasons why I didn't make it...

Either way, I now know what I may have to do to improve myself and my first impressions for other people. Hopefully next year when I reapply to be an RA, I will have all the experience and lessons learned to better myself and earn that position. So I took a nap and then I ran off to FSCC.

FSCC was talking about the Bodies trip we have already planned and in the works.  We also talked about other planned events. Anyways, after that I ran off to chemistry class.

Chemistry was interesting as usual. We learned more about gas laws and the professor was nice and let us out like 20 minutes early today. Yay Professor! So I had time to run to Bartels, take a seat and do homework until my lab. Then it was lab.

Lab was boring, I'd say. We had to evolve oxygen from a compound mix through some crazy apparatus that also involved a Bunsen burner. We had to work in big groups and I was in a group of 5 people with 2 girls and 3 guys including me. However it wasn’t boring all the way. We had to do two trials of our oxygen evolution experiment and we ended up doing it 4 times. That is what happens when you don’t follow instructions; you end up blowing up a test tube because it was clamped too tightly and under the Bunsen burner and then you miss the water level, letting the flask get empty. Yep, that’s chem. Lab.

After Chemistry Lab, I ran to get food and ended up getting Sandellas. They messed up on my bowl by putting in ranch instead of Brazillian dressing and I ended up getting another one for free. I gave it to my roommate as I ate my correctly made bowl. It was quite delicious.. Then after a while, I ran off to the gym and worked out, came back, showered, did math homework and then fell asleeeep..

  6. The final weeks ...

Hello readers!  My name is Jason Swols, and I am a Senior at the University of New Haven.  I am a Communication Major, with a dream to be a Sportscaster for any television station, hopefully ESPN one day.  Other than my contribution to my major, I am a member of the UNH College Republicans, I have a sports talk show on WNHU, Mondays 2-4pm called “Sports Talk”.  I also do play-by-play of the athletic events that are played on campus, and I am the captain of an intramural team with Charger Recreation.

My goal with this blog is to let prospective students know what will go on with the last few weeks of their College Career.  I’m certain many of you prospective students are receiving a lot of information about what will be going on once you get to UNH, but what about when you’re about to graduate and greet the real world?  I know I cannot speak for every student out there ready to graduate, but I’ll do my best of giving as many updates about what is going on in recent events with my life at UNH, as well as giving updates about what the graduation process has on a student on campus.  Thanks very much for reading, and I hope you’ll come back and read some more!

  7. Can Never Catch a Break

So it is a miracle that I have even found the time to sit long down long enough at my computer to blog it up for you guys. I love it how we get a glorious week of for Spring Break and the second we get back to school you need to be prepared to hit the ground running. That is annoying that teachers expect me to enjoy my vacation with my nose in a textbook. And I will tell you right now I did not. =) This was my time off and I was going to enjoy it.

I think a successful break for me is to go home and do nothing, yeah nothing. I don’t need an exciting adventure because I am nonstop while I am here at school. I wanted a break where I could just sit still and enjoy the peacefulness of my backyard up in the Catskill Mountains. I saw some close friends, enjoyed the company of my relatives, visited my grandmother in the hospital, and enjoyed every night I could in the hot tub. Grandma is doing better now, I’ll tell you, she saw me and her face lit up. It was adorable, she was so happy to see me.

But after all that, Monday decided to rear its ugly head and it was time for classes to commence. I can relate these last 3 days back from break to walking/running right into a brick wall over and over again. Like I have had so much to do and a lot to get done for this week it is not even funny. But I am proud to say that it is all getting done and surprisingly done well. *give self pat on the back*

  8. Exciting Week!!!

To start things off…my spring break was AMAZING!!! Miami was gorgeous! I went Kayaking and Air boating in the Everglades! I saw plenty of Alligators. I was about 2 feet away from live ones, it was crazy! I almost didn’t want to come back to school, but then I remembered how excited I’d be to see me friends and start back up!

It’s Wednesday, the week has been flying by and filled with great information! I found out that I got the RA position for next year! I am so excited; I think it will be a great opportunity! Also, my play is this weekend. We have been practicing very hard. Late night practices are crazy, but we got to get it to perfection! Saturday is drawing near, but I believe we are going to be ready!

As for classes, they are going pretty well! My Arabic class has to be one of my favorites. The professor is crazy, but he’s so much fun! And it’s kind of cool that all he does is speak Arabic in class. I believe that is the only way you are going to learn!

Well that’s all for now! 9 more weeks till finals! It’s crazy how fast the semester is flying!

  9. Back from Break

So school is back in session and my spring break is over. I really wish it didn't have to end! I had so much fun. I hung out with my friends and family like everyday and had mini parties at my house and went to work. It was so relaxing, not the work part lol!!! School was the furthest thing from my mind even though I should have been studying because I have a midterm tomm and 2 papers due! Well I did absolutely nothing to prepare; smh at me for slacking! But, I mean it was spring break. Who is worried about school when they should be relaxing, not me, but I am feeling the pressure now. I have 1 paper down and 1 more to go and oh yea and 7 chapters to know! It's okay though, when there is a will there is a way to get this done! Luckily for me I don't have to go to work today but I do have to go tutor and I have an e board meeting and a general meeting for the NAACP. After that I will studying all night long!!! All I want to do is be successful! Well I'll write back soon, I have to finish studying.

    Later days
A little something to remember: When life gives you lemons make lemonade!!!!

  10. Spring Break in Vegas

This past week UNH had its Spring Break and like any other student I was happy to be free from the monotonous schedules and classes. I’m an International student so I thought that I would spend another Spring Break in my dorm room. But, this time I was wrong, I got an email saying that I could go to Las Vegas over the break and get three credits for it. I was excited and confused, is this open to all majors? is it expensive?, is it safe?.  My head was filled with barrage of questions and I was in a predicament.

The moment I went and talked to the instructors I was thrilled, not only was this open to all majors but it was taking us to five star hotels for six days in Las Vegas. I signed up for it and what I have experienced this past week; it was like heaven on earth. We went to various five star hotels in Las Vegas like Bellagio, Monte Carlo, Paris, Caesar’s Palace, The Venetian, MGM Mirage, Wynn and Stratosphere. Guess what?? We stayed in Bellagio for the entire six days. It made me feel rich and famous, almost like Hollywood Celebrities minus the makeup and the paparazzi.

My most memorable part of the tour was the visit to Stratosphere. The Stratosphere Las Vegas is a tower, hotel, and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas. The property's signature attraction is the 1,149 ft (350 m) Stratosphere Tower, the tallest free-standing observation tower in the United States. The Stratosphere is the northernmost of the major Strip casinos and the only one actually in the City of Las Vegas. I liked everything about the Stratosphere from the hotel named as Top of the World, where we had dinner, to the different fun filled rides.

The rides were Heart-Pounding Thrills High at the top of Stratosphere. There were three different types of rides Big Shots, X-Scream and Insanity, the ride. Big Shot Shoots passengers straight up 160 feet at 45 mph (over 4 Gs) until they are 1,081 feet above the Strip. X-Scream is a giant teeter-totter that propels you 27 feet over the edge of the Tower, 866 feet above the ground, Insanity, the Ride is a massive mechanical arm extends 64 feet over the edge of the Tower and spins you at a force of 3 Gs for a truly mind-bending experience. I tried all of these rides and was able to satisfy the adventurous side of me.

The class is called as Hotel and Tourism HTM 452 (Casino Experience). I think this class was an example of experiential education and it made me happy, exonerated from schedules and I had a full on BLAST!!!

  11. Time to get back into the swing of things…. UGH!

Oh no! Spring break is over! It is time to get back into the swing of things, and with two midterms today it will not be easy!

I had such a relaxing time over break… it was all about me! The unfortunate part about that is I GOT USED TO BEING LAZY! This week is going to be the death of me because I have so much to get done! Two midterms today, a paper due tomorrow, RA paperwork due tomorrow, RA placement notices tomorrow (nervous!), and duty on Wednesday Thursday and Friday, with classes and work mixed in… ugh…. I am positive there is more to do that I can’t think of, but oh well. I will have to remember to go to the Beckerman Rec center to relieve my stress! J

So as I was saying in my jumble of words above, I find out where I will be an RA next year (so exciting and nerve racking)! I would like to be the RA of the Sustainability apartments in Soundview, but if that isn’t where I go I know I will still be happy (My second choice is staying in Dunham and Ruden).

So my schedule tends to change a lot, but this is what my schedule looks like for this week!

Sunday- Residents move back in to resident halls / study for midterms

  12. Putting our nose to the grindstone

Alright, Spring break is now over. . . now it’s time to put our nose to the grindstone! I currently should be writing a few papers that are due tomorrow. But instead, I’m listening to Jefree Star and writing a blog –it’s almost as important, right?

Anyways, surprisingly enough, I wasn’t overloaded with work to do over break. I have one paper for Production, Promotion and Distribution, and reading for my Recording Fundamentals class that I just finished. Not too bad huh? Not at all.

MEISA, the music industry club on campus, is getting ready to embark on a journey to Boston for the annual National MEISA conference this weekend. I will be leaving on Thursday, and will be in Boston until Sunday morning. I’m pretty excited! The conference is Friday and Saturday from 8 AM to 10 PM. . . It’s gonna be a long weekend! But, there will be seminars and panels given by some of the top music industry professionals! It’s a great opportunity to network and meet some people in the biz. I just wish more people would take advantage of the opportunity. We had 20 open spots to fill in, and only about 8 people showed any interest. It’s a real bummer. I guess they just don’t know how awesome this opportunity really is.

So, hopefully the hotel will have free wifi and I’ll be able to update from the road. :o) That’s all for now. Keep on rockin’, and I’ll talk to you soon!

  13. As graduation gets closer, I get crazier

So, ever since I got put on the Eligible List for the Louisiana State Crime Lab, I’ve been obsessively checking the website I applied through (governmentjobs.com, for future reference) and my status has been changed from “Put on Eligible List” to “Reviewing Qualifications”. I asked Dr. Maxwell in the Forensic Science department about it and she said that it just means that they’re going through the applications that made it through and I might be hearing about an interview soon.

I’ve already decided that if they ask, I’m going to fly out for interview if possible, because phone interviews can go just plain wrong sometimes. So, now I have to budget for a plane ticket in between my bills. Being an adult can suck sometimes. Well, the bill part anyway.

I was going to spend my entire Spring Break studying for my biochemistry exam that I have next Wednesday and I seem to have gotten absolutely nothing for done it. I managed to print out the material and have answered most of the study guide; I just can’t seem to bring myself to do any more. I suppose I know what I’m doing this weekend and all of next week.

An interesting feature of being the oldest kid in your family and being in college is that you get really random phone calls from family members. For example, my mom was reading the back of a soda bottle once and called me to ask me questions about one of the ingredients in it, forcing me to relive organic chemistry. Or, for example, my little brother received some crazy leg injury and was prescribed something for the pain, but no one is really sure what it does. So, when my brother calls and mentions it, I have to look it up and try to explain the chemistry behind it. It’s amusing at times and definitely a role reversal from when I would come home from elementary school and ask my mom why the alphabet was chosen to be put in that order.

On a final note, just sixty-three days until graduation. Scary. I promise more interesting and less chaotic entries once classes start again.

  14. Spring Break Musings

I had a dream last night that in order to get my degree, I was required to go back and finish out a semester in a random high school. The dream was vivid enough that I woke up extremely disorientated and wondering if I should be getting up and getting ready even though it’s the middle of Spring Break here at UNH. I pray that I never have to go back to high school. I was pretty popular and semi-involved in high school, but neither negates the fact that I was constantly BORED in high school. Plus, high school seems even worse from this side of graduation. Anyone that claims that high school was the best years of their life, well, I feel bad for ‘em.

I’m often intrigued and amused by the people that go home during Winter and Spring breaks and come back saying that their old friends aren’t who they used to be. Simply because the same could be said about anyone that goes to college. People start studying things that they like and become more focused. People grow up and mature a bit, leave behind some of the petty drama that seemed to seep out of lockers and the lunchroom. Or, maybe, they get worse and get more childish and immature thanks to a fake ID and a few nights on the town a week. I’ve seen both.

I usually stay behind during breaks so that I continue to get work done and the campus is definitely quieter when 95% of the residents vacate the residence halls. No classes, no residents knocking on my door to get keyed into their rooms, and much more time to relax and sleep. On the other hand, most of my relaxation time has been spent either in the forensic science department or working on my projects in room.

Speaking of the forensic science department, a friend of mine and I volunteered to help out Admissions and discuss the department in one of their newest projects. We got sent samples of what the finished product will look like and it’s pretty stellar. Be on the lookout for it!

For now, it’s time for dinner and then off to the movies with some friends.

  15. Spring Break!!!

Spring break started on Friday the 13th and runs until Sunday the 23rd! Let me tell you that spring break is much needed and long awaited. It feels like it has been years since our last break even though it was only a month ago (UNH had a nice mini break back in the middle of February)!

So what are my plans? Okay so I went home (Pawtucket, RI) for my nephews 2nd birthday, and then I came back to school to work. My boyfriend is going to visit for a couple of days during the week which will be a great time (I haven’t seen him since I visited him a month ago!). This Friday I am going to take a road trip to Wrentham, MA to go to Wrentham Premium Outlets. My friend Courtney, from California, has heard a lot about it and has been dying to go. I have been a billion times, and love it there! To finish off the weekend I am going to relax as much as possible!

My main goal for this break is to take it as easily as possible. I may not be doing anything to exciting or taking any big trip, but I am doing exactly what I want. No papers or homework for me (except studying for a music midterm…ugh)!

I just got back from home about an hour ago, so I have some unpacking to do. Thankfully the train ride wasn’t too bad so I was able to rest up! Hopefully I will have time to go to the Beckerman Rec Center (I haven’t been to the gym in 3 days!!!!!!), and then later I will be off to the Bridgeport ferry to pick up my boyfriend… woohoo!

… and if you read my last post I have a daily agenda coming up within the next couple of days!

  16. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

It's about 12:30 and I've not yet begun to celebrate for the actual day, but on Sunday I headed to downtown New Haven for the parade. It was madness, and I loved every second of it! Some of my friends from UNH didn't even go home yet for spring break so that they could stay for the parade. It was such a good time, a couple of my friends from home came with me and we dressed all in green for the day, matching just about everyone else who was there. Another successful parade day, I can't wait for next year!

Spring break really did come just in time. I'm catching up on some much needed sleep and relaxing knowing I don't have homework. Of course, there is some homework to be done - my next project for TV Production is due a week from today, and I have a big paper for African American Images due a week from Friday. But, since it's only Tuesday, I'm not worrying just yet.

Unfortunately, my Britney Spears concert for March 26th got postponed...however, I'm just relieved it isn't cancelled. And now, I don't have to skip my music class in order to go - I really didn't want to skip at all, but it's Britney, so I'll do whatever it takes to see her. Also, it's on May 3rd, and my birthday is just four days later, what an awesome gift! It's also the end of Spring Weekend at UNH, so I'm sure it will make it even better. I didn't get to attend Spring Weekend last year because I went to the Bamboozle Music Festival in New Jersey. I've gone the last two years and I'm definitely going to miss it but I heard Spring Weekend is a blast.

Tonight I'm cooking dinner at home and then going to SCSU to see my boyfriend, since their break isn't until next week. Tomorrow I'm working on my TV project and Thursday my mom is taking me to NYC. Saturday I'm having lunch and seeing a show with my family, and Sunday is back to school! Enjoy the rest of your week!

  17. My Quiet Week

Wow… this week seemed to take forever to get through.  It is finally Spring Break though and time to relax (sort-of).  Haha… Because I live more than 500 miles away from campus, I get to stay here and enjoy a very quiet week.  I will be spending a lot of time working (at the Texas Roadhouse) and a lot of time working on some job applications and homework.  It is so crazy to think that graduation is only 69 days away.  It feels like just yesterday I was moving in for the first time as a Freshman!!!  When classes start back up on the 23 I have a feeling that things are going to be crazy.  As a lab assistant in the Chemistry department I set up a lot of the experiments for the students in Physical Chemistry and Synthetic Methods.  These labs are starting a new rotation so it’s going to give me plenty to do for a while.  J I also have a project that I’m working on for a class where I’m going to talk about the chemistry behind straight and curly hair (it’s actually a very cool process).  So I have that to finish up after spring break as well!!! It’s time to go relax some now though… J

  18. Spring Break!!!

Well the last day before spring break. I am still a freshman so there will be no crazy trips to somewhere this year. But at least I get to hang out with all my friends from high school who have spring break the same week as I do. Maybe all colleges are the same in a way eh? Besides, hanging out with friends I haven’t seen in a while beats any crazy party with random people any day.

So I didn’t feel like getting up for my only Friday class which was calculus, but I forced myself to, so I did. I went to calc; we talked about homework and random stuff like that. It was the usual, questions and lecture. Then we were let go. And I have homework due Wednesday we come back and an extra credit worth the same grade as a homework which is good and I have to do.

And so I went back to my dorm and I had all my stuff packed up already and I was ready to go. And my way of transport? Suitemate drops me off at a train station on the way to his house, I get to accompany him, I save money from not transferring in NYC and we’re all happy. That’s why its always good to know someone here in college that lives close to you, because you never know…

And so that ends that week. And on to my Spring Break. I got a 5 page paper and an online chemistry homework. I will love it.

  19. A Week Away

I love this University to death, but I must say I am ready for Spring Break.  This semester I am taking some harder classes than last semester, and these last two weeks have been rough.  A lot of class work, homework, and all sorts of running around crazy.  But I love it.  At the time I may scream all sorts of profanities, but I enjoy staying busy and always having something to do.  It may not be “the fast lane,” but it is my fast lane.  So after all that running around, I am looking forward to sitting back and enjoying a little down time, and spending some time with people I haven’t seen in months.

I think the person I want to see the most is my Grandmother.  She hasn’t been doing too well, and I know seeing me might make her feel a little better.  Being away from home for so long, and in a sense “leaving the nest,” has been a big change for me.  I miss my relatives dearly, and it is going to be nice to spend a week with them.

So here is to a nice, relaxing and restful Spring Break.  After this it is a dead sprint to Summer!!!

  20. A Fun Filled Day

Yay it's Wednesday. Nothing interesting on Tuesday except for a barrage of classes (5 on that day, 1 is a lab) and me waiting for a free self-chosen-lettering-airbrushed trucker hat for a loong time. Good thing about that event though and many events on campus, their too popular. 120 hats available, a 4 hour event, and everything were gone in the first hour. But at least I got one with 732 (Jersey Represeent!)

Well this morning, I tried to wake up for calc and it was quite entertaining, I fell back asleep. But I managed to wake up close to in time anyway. So I ran off for calc as quickly as humanely possible. What we did today was basically homework and more going over stuff such as maxima and minima. It was nice, interesting, but I didn't like it. I wanted derivatives man, just right when I got good, they throw me another topic. But at least I handed in homework, ahh accomplishment.

Then I was free for the day till lab, sooo I ate breakfast (Gotta have my Pops and Low fat milk),then played some video games (Brawl and Soul Calibur, I got the Wii in my common room), was in the middle of a discussion with my suitemates all about how I beat every single one of them in Facebook Tetris and right when they get close to my score, I somehow go higher or faster time. Before I knew it it was lab time.

Now, the beginning lab quiz was a fail because I wasn't good with diagrams and I got the places of the items completely wrong or next to it, but not it. Either way, lab was to dissect a fetal pig, and to learn about the reproductive system. So my group had a male pig and it was 2 girls and 2 guys in my group, and of course they make the 2 guys do the dissection after one of them was disgusted by it and lazy from already dissecting a good amount and another one was the lab book person (my lab book too!). Either way, we had to identify all the organs and such and we had to like break the poor fetal pig's pelvis and such to see more of its reproductive system. It was quite an experience, I had to say.

So I was free the rest of the day, no clubs Wednesday this semester, so I was free to do lots of pre-spring-break work. So I got done a lot of my English, biology, chemistry and math so I wouldn't have to do a ridiculous amount either on or after spring break. Then it was dinner time and Bartels didn't have anything interesting, soo I got a bowl from Sandellas with noodles, now that tasted good. Maybe too good…

Then it was 8pm and it was time for upper classmen dorm room tours, a fun little thing where freshman can actually see the buildings they may want to be in the next year or much later on. So I got to tour Winchester, Dunham, Forest Hills and Sheffield. I looked at the apartments and I was impressed. The space is good and for some of the apartments convenient for stuff I may have wanted to bring here but didn't for space issues. The only issues I can see with any of these apartments is how far it is from the classes and how there is no janitor service and a bathroom resembling a 'public bathroom' so we have to fight for the sink and showers in the morning. All in all it’s still great, and I want my car here now lol so I can get around campus from the apartments without walking.

Then after our tours, I went to AFC, Ambassadors for Christ, or the Christian group here at UNH. When I walked in, they were in the middle of worship singing, then we had a testimony by one of the girls about her very crazy past that was bettered by her faith and a sermon by 2 people about 'godly women'. It was really good, as usual. We had some guests, they were the people of a New Haven Church and these guys stand in the green everyday, evangelizing. They performed an original rap composition about god which was really really good with some nice Jamaican origins.

Afterwards it was the ice cream social at PIRO, which is the Paranormal Club and/or our 'ghost hunters'. Nothing paranormal tonight or anything related, it was a break from all that, so we all ate ice cream and chilled. I got my picture taken for our March Manhunt event in which I am one of many people to hide and teams would have to find me, beat my challenge and get my item for points at the end for prizes. It was a nice meeting and it was quite relaxing.

Then I decided to take a break from the gym and went to sleep after hanging out with my suitemates in the common room and walking with them to Sandellas for that late night snack. What a nice day.

  21. SPRING BREAK!!! WOO HOOO!!!!

The week is finally over! All finished with mid-terms and I can finally begin my relaxing break. Mid-terms weren’t too bad. They were fairly easy to be honest with you. The only downside of taking them was I had to get up so early to go to the class, to just leave a half hour later when I finished! That’s the great thing I love about college, that if you finish a test early you can just leave, you don’t have to wait until class is over since I am usually done fairly quickly depending on the subject.

So enough about school…I am on my way to Miami. In about 4 hours I will be on a plane for Fort Lauderdale, then driving to Miami from there. I am staying right on South Beach.  I plan on lounging about on the beach and working on a great tan so I can come back to school and have everyone be jealous of the wonderful tan I have gotten. I plan on enjoying myself and just taking all the nice weather in while I can.  Swimming with dolphins awaits me, since that’s what I was promised I would be doing! That is one of things I want to do before I die, so I am ecstatic that I will be doing that!

All I got to say now is WOOOOO! SPRING BREAK!!! THANK GOD!! J

  22. Up Till Dawn

March 7th 2009 was an amazing night. It was because Up Till Dawn was being celebrated by the UNH students and staff. It was held in the embellishing Beckerman Recreation Center from 10:00PM-5:00AM. Yes, 5:00AM in the morning on Sunday. UNH students came out to support this important event which helped raise huge sums of money for the Naïve kids with Cancer, being treated at the St Judas Children Research Hospital. There were events like the Obstacle course, Karaoke, Sumo wrestling, Life size board games, Movies, beautiful performances by the different dance groups in UNH, Delicious Food and attractive T-shirts to win and wear. All my friends had loads of fun and they were ready to be sleep deprived for the night just for this noble cause. They were having the time of their life because they thought that they were awesome at the Karaoke competition, but I was dying laughing at how bad their voices were. All in All it was a beautiful night and it was worthwhile to spend it at the nicely decorated Recreation center.

  23. High School Graduation > College Graduation

In the late winter/early spring of each academic year, Residential Life begins the hiring process for the new resident assistant staff for the following year. Since I sit on the selection committee, I’ve been in and out of the office for the past two weeks or so, interviewing the current candidates. It’s a very bittersweet time; I know a lot of the candidates and I’m proud of them for getting to the individual interview (there are stages in the process where people get cut) and I think a lot of them are going to do very well. What’s sad though is that I’m helping to pick out people to replace me and many of my friends when we leave this May.

Graduation for college students is a lot scarier than high school graduation. When I graduated high school, not very much seemed to change for me. I moved around so much growing up that going to a university several states away was easy. I adjusted quickly and made new friends easily. I was studying something I was already interested in, now I was just doing it for credit. I’m the oldest of four boys so sharing a room wasn’t much a change either since I’ve been doing it since I was about four years old. I definitely enjoyed the freedom without my parents, but at the same time, I wasn’t going crazy like many college students and getting hammered every night. In fact, most of my nights were spent watching movies and having midnight trips to the beach and Taco Bell.

High school graduation was absolutely easy. Everything was still mapped out. Now there’s this huge gaping void in front of me and it gets closer every day. The faculty in the forensic science department have been great with giving me advice on what to do. With the current economy, job searching is just plain awful and I’m not interested in graduate school right now; in fact, it’s my back-up plan. And even while I’m excited to move on and become a “real grown-up”, I’m still plenty scared of it. I’ve been a student for sixteen years now, a clear majority of my life, and I’m still a little nervous that somewhere along the way I’m going to fall flat on my face. We’ll see.

On the bright side, I applied for an entry level position as a crime laboratory analyst down south. The job is low enough that I can pick the area I want to concentrate in, ranging from criminalistics to forensic DNA identification to inputting and analyzing samples in CODIS. I got a message a day or so ago saying that my application was received and being checked for qualifications. Today, I got a notification that my application was actually put on the Eligible List. So, who knows, I might have an interview in a few days. Fingers crossed!

  24. The show must go on

Alrighty, blog number two, and I definitely have some interesting stuff to share.

The music industry club, MEISA, of which I am a member of the executive board, has been planning a very exciting concert for the past few months. The original line-up was to be Call it a Night, Stressbomb, and The Queers (a legendary hardcore band) were going to headline. After Call it a Night cancelled on us, we had to scramble to find a third band, which we did. Crackin’, another local CT hardcore band opened up the show.

This past Monday, the day before the show, MEISA found out that our account had been frozen, leaving us with no money to pay The Queers, who wanted their money immediately after they played their set.

We tried negotiating with their manager, but she basically said, “No money, no show”.  So on Tuesday, the day of the show, I sat up in the Student Activities Office from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, waiting to meet with the Director to see if their was any loophole we could go through to pay this band. After being told that there was really no way around it, we ended up canceling the Queers. . .

The Executive Board was so upset, and stressed out, because we had invited so many people, promising that the Queers would play. I feared a riot would break out when the news was broken, so I had planned to not even go to the show.

4:30 rolls around and I notice our Vice President’s Facebook status had changed to “WE GOT THE QUEERS BACK!!!!!” I called him up and found out that our president was able to pull a few more strings, and was able to get $500 cash to pay The Queers, and the show was back on. It was such a relief, and a weight lifted off my shoulders. And it was great to know that if MEISA is ever in a tight spot like that again, that we can work together and pull out of it to put on a great show.

The show was amazing, and ended up being one of the most attended shows MEISA has had in a while.. So, even though we had to go through hell and back, it ended up being a really good night afterall.

Spring Break is next week, and let me tell you, I will be thoroughly enjoying every minute of it! :o)

  25. About Me

My name is Jackie Bartomioli and I am currently a sophomore here at UNH. I am double majoring in Music Industry and Music Sound Recording, two very strong programs here. I’m incredibly excited to be part of this blog for you. There’s so much cool stuff happening here, that you as perspective students should know about so you can take advantage of it once you get here.

I will be doing my best to update this blog 2-3 times a week. I can honestly say that most of the posts will probably focus on the music department here, since that’s what I’m most familiar with, but I will try to get some other topics in here too for all you CJ and Forensics majors.

That’s about all I have for now, but I hope you find that future posts are informative and somewhat humorous.

  26. It’s almost Spring Break!!

So after a long week, I have one lab standing between me and Spring Break! Though I have to admit, it won’t be much of a break. As part of my honor’s program requirements I have to write an Honor’s Thesis. That’s a 20-30 page research basically!! I’ve been doing research on canine hairs and nail clippings and their use as evidence…basically microscopy and DNA. It has been a lot of work, but it’s a great way to work one on one with instructors and gain that knowledge/experience that grad schools and employers really look for.

Along with working on my thesis, I’ll be working on my speech for graduation!! I’m a pretty good public speaker, but not a great speech writer. So for the next two months I’ll be trying to perfect it, and hopefully it won’t put anyone to sleep! Being class president has been a lot of fun, but I didn’t realize until this year that I had to speak at graduation… It makes me a little nervous, but my parents (who don’t know I’m speaking yet) will be really excited!

If you’re interested in being a class officer, I would definitely recommend it. You can plan all sorts of fun events, but most importantly you get to do all of the planning for the Snow Ball (our annual winter semi-formal) and Senior Week. The senior class officers just met today to finalize pretty much everything for Senior Week. This year we’re going on a trip to New York City and taking a dinner cruise that night .I’m super excited, it should be a lot of fun!

Well I’m flying out for Spring Break early Friday morning. I don’t know if I’ll have access to a computer while I’m gone, so you may not hear from me until next Thursday…don’t miss me too much!!

  27. True Life..I'm a Student Leader at UNH

Hello! My name is Kristina and I am a junior here at UNH. I am extremely involved on campus and I would like to share all of the aspects of my life at UNH with you! First off, I’ll give you a little background on me. I grew up in a very small town called Matamoras, Pennsylvania (it has less people in it than attend UNH!). I graduated with honors from Delaware Valley High School in 2006. I chose to attend UNH because of its Criminal Justice program and the way I felt when I stepped onto campus for the first time.  UNH has now become like a second home to me, and has shaped me into the person that I am today. I have become involved in many aspects of student life here and I want to use my experiences to give you a little taste of what it’s like to be at UNH.

Now that I have talked a little about where I come from, I will talk a little about the things I am involved in here on campus. First and foremost, I am a student. I am studying Criminal Justice (Investigative Services) with a minor in Fire Science. My plans are to graduate with my B.S. in Criminal Justice and then attend law school to further my education in the field. Next, I am also an athlete. I am Co-Captain of the Women’s Tennis Team. We have a year-round season and we are part of the Northeast 10 conference. I play #1 singles and #1 doubles. Lately, however, I have been injured with chronic shin splints. Our spring season is about to start so I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about it!

On the student life side of things, I am also a Resident Assistant in Winchester Hall. Next year, I will be taking the Senior Resident Assistant position in Botwinik Hall, a freshman residence hall.  A Resident Assistant is a student who is available on the floor to assists those that live on the floor. I am there as a mentor, a friend, and also as an authority figure to keep order in the building. I am also very involved in the Undergraduate Student Government Association at UNH, as the Executive Assistant (fancy name for secretary). Our student government is a very influential organization on campus and we do everything from hearing student concerns to facilitating communication between students and administrators. Since you’re stuck with me for the rest of the semester, I’ll leave the details of USGA out for another post!

I am certainly looking forward to blogging about my crazy student leader life and I hope that you will enjoy reading about it! Enjoy the rest of your day!

  28. My Intro ...

Hi!!! My name is Brittany and I am a senior at the University of New Haven.  I am double majoring in Chemistry and Forensic Science.  I am from Columbia, South Carolina where I live with my mom, dad, 14 year old brother Tyler and dog Cinnamon!  I love playing the flute and reading in my spare time.  I don’t have nearly as much free time as I wish due to the fact that I have a job off-campus.  I work at Texas Roadhouse about five nights a week (but I love every minute of it)!!!! I also work on campus in the Chemistry department as a lab assistant.  I am graduating in May (SCARY)… and am just waiting to hear back from a couple graduate schools and a few job applications.  I love it here at UNH and it is going to be very hard to leave in just a few short months.  I’ll keep you guys updated!!!

  29. A Week Beginning

Well here is the first blog. I had a pretty bad week last week and it involved just basically test after test every day and then work after work in all of my classes from math to chemistry to biology. And of course procrastination stinks when you find out you have to read a 500 page 35 chapter novel for English class in a day. Which I did, I am a fast reader. Well, something I have learned, don’t slack off. If you do, it gets you back.

Well here be Monday and here be a beginning of a week. It was not exactly the start I hoped which will explain the title which ‘week’ can also be ‘weak’. Well anyways, I tried to wake up today for my 10:50am math class at like 9am and I did, I woke up at 8:30am. However, I was very lazy and fell asleep again till like 10:00am, and then laziness struck me and then I woke up at 10:30am, I had to go.

Math was entertaining as usual, my calc professor is great and he makes it easy. But when you are like me and happened to doze off in one lesson, you end up finding out that that one lesson is the basis for the lesson this week and you will now have to go back to the book and catch up. Well, I learned from last week and I paid full attention today and after math, I decided to look over my notes and the book and now I am 90% caught up. I still need to go to CLR for help though, and I will.

And then since this is Monday, it is my busiest day. I chose my schedule to have one class on Monday and that was because of all my extracurricular activities, more meeting times are on Mondays then any other day of the week.

I had USGA today, I don’t hold a position but I normally attend. So because of sleep, I slept and almost missed ISA, but I made it in time. We talked about the International Festival and then after that meeting. I ate dinner with my suitemates because it was 4:30pm then. Something that I like to do is to save my dining dollars by having meals like this. Breakfast, No lunch, but Dinner at 4:30pm and then Sandellas anytime after if early dinner solved nothing. After dinner was Victimology Club. Like usual, I was the only guy in the club meeting of like 10 girls, but it’s also good too, it shows how open all the clubs here are on campus, I would join the BSU and they would be okay with it if I tried.

Then it was the SCOPE meeting and we talked about the events we planned to do from Rock and Roll week to Comedy Week. I was a bit confused but I managed to find my committee after we split into committee meetings after the general one. Then I walked out with free soda because SCOPE had some left over from a past event and was giving them out.

After that was my Paintball Club meeting and it was fun as usual. Good thing, we can actually paintball now, since it isn’t snowy and/or rainy. Then later on, some homework, a trip to the gym and then it was sign ups for the Scuba Club’s Boston Aquarium Trip at like 10pm. Problem with that was, I bet people have learned from the last school-sponsored Boston Trip (To see Pink Floyd Laser Show at the science museum) and tonight, they decided to line up like 45 minutes earlier. So by the time I arrived there half an our early, it had 60 people, 45 people to a bus meaning I would have no chance. It’s a great deal though, come on, a free trip to Boston, to the aquarium and then we get free time to walk all over Boston? I love the trips here. There will be more.

Semi-Disappointed over the sign ups, I went to my hall council meeting. We talked about events we wanted to plan like a Dorm Barbeque outside. It was good, but in the early stages, however, later on it will be better, and we will have a defined plan.

Well after that I’m done for the day…Some chilling, homework and SLEEP.

  30. Mother Nature is a Harsh Mistress

First and foremost, let me say this: I hate New England. As someone who grew up in a climate that causes me to get cold when it dips below the eighties, I can’t stand New England weather. It was warm and sunny here yesterday. I went out and I bought new flip-flops to celebrate. Then, today, in the middle of our USGA meeting, it started snowing. SNOWING. It's MARCH. I don't understand the weather around here. It continues to mystify and annoy me.

At least I had the forensic science department to distract me from the fact that I was walking through the snow in a pair of flip-flops. However, when I saw Major Palmbach, the head of the forensic science department, he took one look at me and shook his head. “You’re just like my kids, no concept of cold weather.”

“Look. It was sunny yesterday. I can’t help it if New England weather likes to toy with me.” I left him smirking at me as I headed into the back room to finish the proposal for my new independent study with our CSI professor, Pete Massey.

A new latent bloodstain detector called Hemascein has hit the market and during AAFS in February, the company that made it said they would be willing to get us a few free samples. I called the company up today to hold them to their promise. About ten minutes later, I finally found myself talking to a man who not only agreed to send me a free kit, but when I told him the department was planning on publishing my research about the product, he agreed to send me as many as I wanted, I only had to email him. The things that people will do for our department is amazing. So, in about a week, I will be splashing jars of blood around a room not only for credit but something awesome to put on my résumé. Expect plenty on that, perhaps even a photo or two.

On that note, I am actually extraordinarily hungry and it’s time for a late night run to Taco Bell. College has some pretty awesome perks.
