Hello gentle readers! My name is Billy Fogarty and I’m currently a senior at the University of New Haven, staring graduation right in the face. I’m a forensic science major with a biology emphasis. I’m the oldest child of two retired Marines and have moved all over the country, starting with Arizona and finally settling outside of Baltimore. Because I moved so much, I had little to no trouble settling right in at UNH and making myself a new home. I’m here during a lot of breaks, especially summer, and work on campus doing a variety of things. of
I absolutely love my major and have a bit of disdain for the crime shows like NCIS, CSI, and the like that make it seem like such a glamorous and easy world. I don’t know what instruments or programs they’re using, but whatever they are, I wish our department could get some. Although I chose to go bio track with my degree, I’ve taken and am taking various criminalistics courses such as forensic microscopy, forensic odontology, and am in the conducting a research project and an independent study. I also recently applied and was approved to become a student affiliate in the criminalistics division of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences at the annual meeting this past February in Denver, Colorado. I attended with undergraduates, graduates, and some of the faculty and had an amazing time.
Outside of the forensic science department, I’m still fairly involved on campus. In high school, I was only involved in one or two extracurricular activities and definitely saw college as a way to get really involved and meet plenty of people. I’m the editor-in-chief of the Chariot Yearbook, a second-year resident assistant, a student tour guide, a summer orientation leader, am actively involved in our Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA), and I also sit on several committees across the campus. I do all of it because I love being involved and I absolutely love the university. It’s crazy to think that I’ve been here for almost four years and am currently on my way out.
Expect blogs to encompass the various “hats” I wear on campus, from USGA to Res Life to the amazing and fun insanity that is my major. And believe me, I tell it like it is.
