Student Blog

  1. Lets here it for 2013!

The first three SOAR sessions have definitely set the bar high. As an Orientation Leader, I have very high expectations for the next 3 groups of incoming students!

Here is my recap of the first SOAR:

Day one was a little less than fun to play outside because of the extreme amounts of rain in the North East. It was doable though… we made do with the indoor space provided. The OL skits were extremely funny as usual. We always outdo ourselves! The food was amazing! And everyone seemed to enjoy the very busy day. As for the night activities, everyone loved comedian Joe Matarese (so funny)! The other activities went well too.

Day two started out cloudy, but ended up being a gorgeous day! The special surprise at the end of the day was a hit! It is definitely a great way to end the SOAR Experience! Incoming students exited with the Orientation staff at their highest energy level (saying goodbye was really tough)!

I hope everyone enjoyed the first SOAR, and if you haven’t come yet I will see you soon!!!!

  2. My Final Post

This is my last blog…ever. I just took my last exam of my undergraduate career here at UNH, and it feels great. Now, it is on to Senior Week activities.

As I look back on my time here at UNH, I have to say that it was everything I expected coming into college and more. It truly was the best four years of my life. I will definitely never forget the people I met here and the friends I have made.

It was really sad this past week as I took down all the posters and pictures in my room, and cleaned out my desk. It was weird not having to go to class anymore, knowing that I will never be in an undergraduate class again. It was also weird not having to go to work anymore after going to work everyday for the past two years.

I have no idea what I am going to do now…I need to have surgery on my arm again because I broke a screw that is holding part of my elbow together. So, that throws my summer out the window, and puts a big kink in the job search. But, I know something will turn up.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe summer! Good luck with everything!

  3. Busy with Finals!!!

Okay, so now I hate being busy. It's no fun this week. I haven't even had a chance to work because I have so many things to do with finals; good thing it was just my birthday or I might be a little short on cash. Regardless, I am soooo close to being finished and that's pushing me forward.

So far, I've had a final in my music industry class and in Intercultural Communication. The music one, unfortunately, could not have been worse, simply because a lot of it was on production, a.k.a. stuff I don't know. But it's fine because we get the lowest grade dropped so I should finish with a B+ or so (I am usually obsessed with A's but with that final, I'll settle for a B). I'm sure, however, that I will get an A in Intercultural Communication, as well as Persuasive Communication - the final for that was a debate, and my team won!

In African American Images my final grade was a paper that I handed in on Tuesday so we'll see how that goes. Just two more finals and I'm done!

Tomorrow is the TV Production Fundamentals final, and we have to hand in our movie. My disc drive decided to be awesome (sarcasm) and delete everything I had on it, so I pretty much had to start from scratch. It was rough but I like how everything has come out so far and I think it will be even better than if I had used my original materials. Tomorrow I'm just going to add the video from the production I directed (which came out really well) and hopefully I'll be all set.

I'm off to study and maybe play some Wii before bed. Good luck studying for your finals! :)

  4. Opening Night and Cleaning!

Opening Night for “On the Rocks with a Twist” was last night! We didn’t have a huge turnout but our performance was AMAZING! The night consisted of 6 ten minute plays. I was in the third one, Foreplay! It was hectic getting it all together. Our cast had about 4 practices where the whole cast was together, it was crazy. We pretty much got the play together in a week. I must say I am extremely proud of my cast and myself of being able to pull it off! We still have two more performances, tonight and tomorrow night! We’re going to continue to do a great job, I just know it!

Other than that I have mainly been cleaning! Final Room Inspections are tomorrow and of course no one cleans in my room. Word of advice to all you guys, keep your rooms clean!!!!! So I just spent the last two hours cleaning my room, well most of it. My roommates are cleaning their own laundry and desks, I am not touching that!! So my portion of the room looks very nice and neat! That is pretty much it though, nothing really exciting going on..just that it’s coming close to the end of the year and I am so excited! Good-Bye School, Hello Summer :-)

  5. It's Almost Over!

School is almost over, I can't believe it. I really can't believe 3 years have gone by so fast and now I am about to be a senior. Time flys when your having fun lol. School has been very hectic lately. I've been doing papers and projects non stop. I hate the fact it keeps raining, why can't the sun just come out and stay out?!

Anyway, I have quite an agenda today. Currently I am in class but as soon as I get out I am going to New York for a job interview. I don't feel like going at all because of the weather! Hopefully I make it back in time to go to church. Well class is starting ill write back soon.

    Until next time,

    Later days!

  6. My Challenges in the Studio

I’ve come to the conclusion that Studio C ( the studio you use as a sophomore ) hate me and my group. Yep. For each project we’ve had to do, something hasn’t been working. The first time, ProTools wasn’t working properly, and wouldn’t let us record. And the second time, the ProTools interface wasn’t even turned on. Since nobody in my group has been taught how to trouble shoot ProTools, and we didn’t want to mess anything up more, we just sat in the studio for two hours doing nothing. I emailed my teacher from the studio, and he told me and my group that we could have an extension for the second project- we ended up being able to finish the first one.

Unfortunately, the only studio time available is this Wednesday during the last MEISA show of the year. :o(

Oh well, in the end, academics are more important anyway. And to be honest, I’d rather have more time in a studio than go to a concert –even if Patent Pending is playing. . .

  7. A quick update

Alright, so I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a week, but I’ve been super busy (like always). I had two prospective students shadow me last week –Hey Danielle and Jordan!!! It was a lot of fun! They had such a great time, and I think I might have persuaded them both to go to UNH. :o)

Unfortunately, I don’t have any updates on the record label. It’s kind of taken a back seat with finals coming up. Finals are going to be a bear, not really looking forward to them, but we all have to go through it right? I really only have three –Music Theory II, Recording Fundamentals, and Physics of Music and Sound. Not too bad, but enough to worry me a bit. Time to put my nose to the grindstone again. . .

  9. Hectic Week

Wow! This week is extremely busy for me! Once again I have a theatre production Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of this week! That means starting tonight I will be practicing in Dodds Auditorium till about midnight! On top of that, I have a paper to write for Arabic, in Arabic! Also, finals start the end of next week! The dreaded post test that all English students have to take to pass English is on Thursday, May 14th. Students always stress over this test, but in the end they find that they have all passed! I just cannot wait for that last final to end and I can begin my summer. I will be going home for a week and then coming right back to campus because the Admissions Office offered me a job to work with them all summer! That will be lots of fun since I love everyone in the Admissions Office! It definitely helps to get involved on campus and make yourself known so that people do recognize you and will grant you these types of opportunities!

For now I am just studying my lines and my work for classes! TTYS! :-D

  10. What a weekend!

I did so much and you'd think I'd be exhausted right now but I'm absolutely wired and excited about everything that happened. I'll summarize it as best I can.

So Friday was the concert you've all been reading about for weeks now. It was a lot of fun and very good. We didn't stay for the entire show since we had other stuff we wanted to do, but it went well and I think the UNH community as a whole was happy with it. After we went to the beach for awhile and it was so nice out! We sat on the rocks and hung out, it was nice and felt like summer.

Saturday was the carnival and I loved it. There was an elephant which was definitely the main attraction, and I went on some rides and saw all of my friends. It was much bigger than I expected it to be, and there was a lot to do. The best part? We didn't have to pay for any of it! I kept thinking I would need a ticket or a couple dollars to do everything but it was all free. Definitely a very fun day.

So FINALLY Sunday came, the day I've been waiting for forever. It was the Britney concert and it was absolutely amazing. My friend from home came with me, and we walked around Mohegan Sun for a bit, bought some merch, and then went in. We missed the Pussycat Dolls because we didn't really care to see them, but in between they had a bunch of circus acts going on. Seeing Britney was surreal; I am such a huge fan that it's indescribable but let's just say I was a little numb in the beginning because I wasn't sure I'd ever get to see her live again. Her dancing was on-point and the show itself was unbelievable. At one point she ran to the side of her stage and kissed her boys, they were so cute. I feel like I blinked and it was over, but it was fantastic. I'm sooo happy, I would pay any amount of money to do it again.

My birthday is this Thursday so the next few days will be a scramble to get some work done. I wrote out a big schedule for myself, and I think I'm going to be locked in my room the next couple of days. Tuesday is the day I have to direct in TV Production and film the last portion of my movie, I'm super nervous about it. I have a final on my birthday so I'm going to be studying on and off all week. This is definitely the busiest time of my year!

  11. Spring Weekend Wrap-Up

My final Spring Weekend has come to an end.  It was certainly a weekend of memories that I'll never forget.  The concert was alright; I heard Trey Songz was terrible and Blue Jupiter had a moment, so I'm glad I waited to show up a little later.  My buddies went up only to see Third Eye Blind, and we got early enough to see Trapt as well.  Boy, was that painful!  Trapt was garbage, but the twenty students on campus that like them were having a grand-old-time, so more power to them.  Third Eye Blind was fantastic, and they were humbled by how popular they are even though it's been a few years since they've released an album.  Sure enough, the concert was good timing for them to announce the release of their fourth album coming out in the summer.

The Carnival was so-so.  The food was decent, but after four years of the same carnival it did get a little boring.  Nonetheless my luck from the MacBook victory is still with me, because I came away with a $50 gift card to iTunes.  Yay!

Tonight the school is showing the movie "Gran Torino".  I'm not going to watch it just because I'm not up for a movie tonight, but I would have assumed the school would have had a funny movie shown instead of a racially-motivated movie like this.  Oh well, I'm sure that'll stir up a little controversy on campus come Monday morning.

Speaking of Monday, Last Man Standing begins.  It's a weeklong test of students' will, strength, knowledge, and overall desire to be the proud owner of two-thousand dollars by sometime Friday Night.  I came in third last year, and came away with $500, so fingers crossed I come up with a little cash before graduation!  Until next time...

  12. The Mid-Week Craze

Well as much I as didn’t want it, the weekend was over. I had my Six Flags Great Adventure trip on Saturday and I loved it very much. It was just me and 4 other friends (the others didn’t show up in time) and every single roller coaster in the park. All 4 of them have never been to Six Flags Great Adventure so I lead them around the entire day. One of my friends, who’s from Oregon, has never been on a roller coaster and guess what we made him ride as his first one ever? Kingda Ka the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster!! Other than that, the park had some improvements from last year and I can’t wait until I go back to Jersey for the summer and visit the park several more times. The wooden coaster El Toro was popular among us and unpopular for my roommate, who lost his cell phone on it. Hopefully the Six Flags employees find it and return it. Still, it was a great day though, a great adventure at Six Flags Great Adventure.

On to the weekdays, a calculus exam to started off my Monday, it wasn’t what I wanted to look forward to, but hopefully I did somewhat well on it when I get it back later this week. Tuesday was crowded as usual with my multiple classes and now I can tell you never to have 5 classes on the same day. Especially, the ‘hard’ classes like chemistry, biology and English. When all 3 classes share an important date, it gives me problems trying to meet the work expectations. I thought of stuffing everything on Tuesday because back in high school I was used to having all my classes in a row in a day and I have almost no classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but since its college, that idea FAILS.

Spring weekend is getting closer and closer. I have signed up to volunteer for both the concert and the carnival. I can’t wait until Friday and Saturday when all our efforts reward us. A really cool thing for the carnival, we’re going to have many rides, free games, a mechanical bull, a mechanical surfboard and an elephant! Yep a live elephant all the way from Jersey for people to ride. I can’t wait! There will be so many people and it will be very fun!

The year is ending as well, the weather is getting warmer and I may make a West Haven beach run very soon and maybe a NYC trip with my friends after spring weekend. I can’t wait!!!!!!!!

  13. My Tough Semester

Whoever said this semester was going to be easy lied to me!!  Well I guess I sort of lied to myself. You see, I normally take five class (equaling 15 credits) and three labs (equaling 3 credits). This semester even though I’m taking 17 credits, three credits are for my internship which I did last summer and three credits are for my drum lessons (yes, even though I’m a forensic science major I can still take drum lessons, cool huh?). So really I’m taking 11 credits this semester. Should be easy, right?! Wrong!! Add in my thesis, working at least 25 hours a week, sorority stuff, class of 2009 stuff, and trying to have some fun and you have a really busy girl! It probably doesn’t help that I have senioritis to the max as well!

Anyway, my week…I have to admit it wasn’t terribly exciting. I had an exam on Wednesday that I thought I did really well on (I was wrong), lab on Thursday as usual, then I worked most of the weekend. It was horrible being stuck inside with the weather being so beautiful! I did go to Cold Stone for ice cream this weekend…twice! Oh and I went to Rita’s for some Italian ice…I sure will miss that place when I move back home! Speaking of home, still no update on the job search or apartment search :-\ Oh well…I’ll keep trying!

I’m presenting my thesis this Thursday *bites nails* then I have an exam next Wednesday. I have to finish my internship journal…whoops! I have two more lab reports to write, and then I’m done until finals!!! WOO! I think I’m getting excited a little too prematurely though…it’s a lot of work to get done in one week! So as you can clearly tell by the blog, my mind is in a million and one places now and it’s crunch time. So I should probably get to crunching!

P.S. If you haven’t already sent your deposit to the school, do it NOW! It’s due Friday!! Oh and sign up for SOAR. SOAR is a blast…I’ll tell you more about it on Thursday!

  14. Home and Enjoying the Rays

Friday Night I could not sleep. I was so excited to go home. My boyfriend and I drove up to my cousin’s house in Methuen, Ma for their son’s 1st Holy Communion. Before we went there though we stopped in Newburyport and walked around downtown. The weather was gorgeous, except the fact that I was sitting in a hot car baking for the most part. I got sunburn on one of my arms and one of my legs because the sun only hit the right side of my body. LOL. Once we got to Methuen, we got to have a lot of fun! I absolutely love my little cousins so we were just running around all day playing with the balls. It was also just great seeing my family who I don’t get to see often. This past was just very stressful for me. My play goes on in a little over a week and we are no where ready to perform it. We are still trying to nail our lines straight. So what is a better way to relieve stress than to pay a nice visit home, and that is exactly what I did. The weather was beautiful!!!!

Other than that, nothing really happened this weekend.  School is almost finished which is nice, but at the same time nerve-racking because that means finals are coming!!! So yayyy to studying!

  15. It's a Beautiful Day

It was a gorgeous weekend at UNH.  It felt really nice to get to wear shorts for a few days, but it was a nice reality check that it's time to get some sun.  These legs of mine have been hidden behind pants since late fall, so these warm days we have coming up will feel really nice.  This past weekend we had a few games of softball for  intramural sports, and I purposely didn't put on any sunscreen.  It may not have been the smartest idea, but it felt pretty nice to get a little red.

The next few days look to be quite nice outside.  I'm hoping to take advantage of that and get a little sun outside.  Spring weekend is this weekend, and if the weather is going to be sub-par for that, then I might as well enjoy the weather now!

  16. Yankees/Red Sox at UNH

So as I procrastinate I put on the Yankees/Red Sox game. I haven't been too interested in baseball since high school, but I am a Yankees fan. It's a pretty even split here at UNH - if someone doesn't cheer for either team, they at least have a preference of who wins. I think NYC is just an all-around better city than Boston, and my entire family is comprised of Yankee fans. Even though I am mostly a fan based on association, I still get super annoyed when Boston wins. We'll see what happens - Yankees are losing now but I'm crossing my fingers that they'll pull through.

I am so excited for Spring Weekend! It's so close and there are some awesome things planned for it. I waited in a long line on Thursday to get my concert ticket, absolutely everyone is pumped to see Third Eye Blind. The spring concerts in the area this year haven't been that great, and a lot of my friends from other schools are jealous of our lineup. I'm counting down the days.

We did a debate in Persuasive Communication on torture the other day. I'm still not entirely sure where I stand on the subject but listening to everyone talk definitely swayed me toward a side. I didn't expect much from the debate because we didn't have a lot of time to prepare but it went well. Our class is getting really good at debates, and our final exam is a debate. My team is debating to legalize marijuana, and I'm very confident that we're going to do well.

Finals are creeping up behind us. The kids at Northeastern are already finished, which is so weird. We have two weeks of regular classes left, but I have some finals during that time. It's going to be rough studying in this heat wave, but I can't wait to spend my free time at the beach - which will hopefully be soon!

  17. An Adventure to Rememeber

There was nothing much going on this week except many exams and much talk on the end of school. My labs were fun as Chem. Lab got me doing Acid Titration and Bio Lab got me doing pig digestive system dissecting. My Calc class was teaching me how to graph functions without a calculator and my other classes continued on with their syllabus-following-lectures. Clubs like FSCC and Paintball Club voted in new E-Boards and gave members a preview of what to expect in the year to come.

I also got to experience riding a segway this week. In order to promote the movie ‘Mall Cop’, one of the clubs on campus had a promotion-thing where you could learn to ride a segway and you get to ride it around the Maxcy quad. It was hard at first because it just didn’t look like it would balance me, but after riding on one. I really want one and I would get it if it wasn’t as expensive as a car…

Additionally, SCOPE started selling Spring Concert tickets from Tuesday to Thursday and it was extremely crowded almost every night. The cool thing about Spring Weekend is that everything is free for UNH students. The tickets to the concert were completely free to all undergraduates, $10 to Undergrad guests and every one else. Then when the Spring Carnival comes the day after the Spring Concert, students get to play all the games and go on the rides for free.  The day after that, we’re supposed to get a really good comedian and that is free as well. I can’t wait for my first Spring Weekend ever!

For the rest of this entry though, I am going to share with you readers an entertaining story about how I managed to get on possibly the most popular SCOPE trip this year as first 6 people out of about 160 people for a 47 spot bus.

Signups for the Six Flags Great Adventure trip were this week and all I had to say was that it was a ‘great adventure’ in itself, trying to get on to the trip. From previous trips the school had, I’ve learned that an hour early is actually too late. The first Boston trip the school had to see a Pink Floyd Laser Show in Boston, I narrowly made it on with 2 friends when I went there 20 minutes before signups. We were like the last 3 people to get on the 48 person bus there. The next Boston trip the school had was to the Boston Aquarium. I went there an hour early and by then, the 47 spots on that bus have been taken and the wait list was enough to fill another bus. Too bad they never got that second bus though.

For this trip, I actually waited 4 hours before signups with a group of friends. This one of the, if not, the most popular trip SCOPE has had all year (Would you say no to a free ticket and food voucher for a good amusement park?). For our ‘camp out’, we just grabbed some books, computers and dinner and just chilled in the couches near the entrance of Bartels. Cool thing about that, during dinner time, you see so many people walk in, from people you know, to people you don’t know but that you know are on campus or in classes to even faculty members. I probably had random conversation with close to 20 people I knew in a 2 hour period, asking me and my friends what we were doing randomly sitting in Bartels.

Then the times approached, and like an hour and a half before when sign ups are for the Six Flags trip, a miscommunication occurred when a SCOPE member showed up for the Spring Concert tickets and people assumed they were doing both Concert Tickets and Six Flags signups (excitement is a crazy thing). There was a 20 person line for the concert (it was a slow day) and about 70 people for the Six Flags trip (For a 47 spot trip!). There were arguments all over the place over what line was for what and a lot of people were trying to jip other people out of a spot. It got confusing which prompted me to go upstairs to find the SCOPE person correctly responsible for the trip.

I found him and he actually decided to move the signups to the Alumni Lounge, instead of the crowded downstairs area. Because I got the inside information and because I knew him enough to hear it from him (One good reason to be in clubs, you get first dibs), I called my friends and we were the first 6 in line. However, to be fair to the people downstairs, the SCOPE people wanted to give out counters (in the form of raffle tickets) to everyone downstairs on the ‘fake’ line to determine their place in line and to ensure no cutters before the 8pm signups. They proceeded to leave the lounge to look for the tickets.

In order to secure our place as the first 6 people, the line downstairs had to be broken up, as messed up as that sounds. But for that to happen though, would cause massive chaos. But luckily for me, one of my friends with me told the first group of people downstairs in line downstairs about the signups moved to upstairs and they spread the news to the next group, and then it spread some more. Eventually, everyone downstairs shifted upstairs, it was like an hour before signups and we had like 80 people waiting for it already. (The numbers went up as time passed)

The SCOPE people came back out with the tickets, but because the line downstairs was nonexistent and the fact that by now around 90 people gathered at the entrance to the alumni lounge, they had no choice but to go to us first, the first 6 people. We then went inside, got our tickets and we waited for 40 minutes before the official signups time. By then, the amount of people waiting to get on the trip had jumped to about 140. As I left, after the signups, I estimated around 160 people. Wow, popular trip…

  18. My Little Pony, I mean, Freak-Out.

So, remember how I was having a good couple of weeks, and I was waiting for something bad to happen? Well, this week has been incredibly difficult, and it’s only Wednesday. . .

It all started at the beginning of the month, when I got an email saying that my financial aid application was incomplete. Now, usually what happens, at least for me, is that my tax woman sends in all of my tax stuff to the financial aid office, and they handle everything, and everything is hunky-dory. However, right before tax season started, my tax lady had a stroke. Even after hearing this, my parents still decided to go to her, because she has done our taxes for the past five years. She’s done our taxes wrong for those five years, but my parents thought this would be THE year. Haha.

So the applications have to be completed by this Friday, April 24th. I got an email saying that my W-2’s were missing, and I have since been trying to get in touch with my accountant (who didn’t answer one of my phone calls) and my boss to hopefully get a copy of my W-2’s. I was able to successfully accomplish the latter, but then, when I asked my boss to fax the forms to the financial aid office, she decided it could wait a few days.

Here I was, in West Haven, trying to get financial aid, while my W-2’s are sitting an hour away in Bristol at my place of work. My boss finally faxed them in, and I will have financial aid, but I’ve been practically pulling my hair out for the past few weeks. . .

On top of that, I got a 62 on a music theory quiz. I NEVER get anything bellow an 80! I was flipping out! Then I completely forgot about my Production, Promotion and Distribution test this week. Everything is just piling on top of me, to the point where I really don’t have a chance to breath.

I bet you’re wondering where the good part of this blog is huh? Well, I’ve been kicking it into high gear today. I made myself a To Do list that was literally a full page (11x8.5”) long. Including writing this blog, I have crossed off a total of five things. Keep in mind, some of the things included on this list are getting my hair cut, dying it, watching a movie so I can return it to my friend and picking up a metronome/tuner and a pitch pipe at guitar center. So really, a lot of the stuff can be put on hold. But I do need to write my physics lab, do my physics homework, write an article for the music magazine and a few more blogs for the week. No big deal, right? I can pull an all-nighter if I have too. :o)

And right now I’m listening to the ever-mellow “Hotel California”. That song can always put me in a better mood, and it has yet to disappoint.

Obviously the job market is tough.  I also got word back from one of the television stations I applied to for an entry-level job that I do not have enough experience.  Enough experience for an entry-level job?  Nice.  Nonetheless looking for a job isn't as difficult as it'd seem in the broadcast industry.  I'm not too certain of other careers out there, but when a television/radio station wants someone to apply, they usually will not advertise on some of the popular job-hunting web sites, like Monster.com.  Granted a few do put up openings on that site, but there are about six web sites that are based only on broadcasting-based job sites.  With just a few weeks remaining until the upcoming graduating class looks for jobs, these web sites are practically updated every day with new jobs.  I have yet to look into it, but I'm pretty sure many popular careers have web sites just like this; it just takes some time in order to find the right site, and then the right job.

The point I'm trying to get across is that yes it's difficult to get a job, but no it isn't impossible!

  20. Cartoons in College!!!

So one of the major responsibilities is to put on programs for our residents.  Therefore as I have noticed that recently my residents have seemed a little on edge and stressed, and I wanted to find a way to make them feel better.  I devised a program where we would all meet up in the common lounge and watch the old school Nicktoons on my TV, while eating milk and cookies.  I found a website www.theorangesplat.com that streams all these old shows from my past.  I was vastly impressed that I was able to get 30ish people to come and sit with us while we watched shows like Rugrats, Rocket Power, Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life, and many more.  I have a cable that allows me to connect my laptop to my TV, so everyone was able to watch and enjoy.  I had a wide selection of cookies, and plenty of milk to go around.  It was an amazing night, and the residents really enjoyed taking a break from their busy lives to enjoy a piece of their past.  We all get stuck in the fast lane, and forget to satisfy our inner child.  It is a lesson I am still learning myself; if we are to be mentally well, we must take time out to do things we truly enjoy for ourselves.  Tonight this came in the form of delicious sugary treats!

So please everyone don’t forget, life is short.  So take some time to truly enjoy the company of those around you, and embrace the time that we all have together.

  21. Greek Life at UNH

Sorry it’s been so long since my last post!! I’ve been quite busy! This past Thursday (when I usually like to write my blogs) I had to go dress shopping for my friend’s wedding (which was Friday night). Then Saturday I had a community service event to go to with my sorority sisters. Then I worked all day Sunday and that night had elections for our leadership team and coordinators. We currently have about fifty sisters in the sorority and about thirty positions to fill, so we were there for a while!

So I’m going to take this opportunity to tell you the truth about Greek Life, at UNH anyways! For those of you who watch that show on TV…it’s nothing like that! We do like to have socials and mixers with other sororities and fraternities, but drinking is never involved. Sometimes we just watch movies or sporting events, other times we like to have dinner together or go bowling together. However, most of the events we have are community service or related to one of our philanthropies. We have one huge event that we hold every year called Deepher Dude. It’s kind of a male beauty pageant, but it is so much fun! We have held it twice since we’ve become a chapter, and both times we’ve raised over $1000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Greek Life is really growing at UNH. I definitely suggest attending recruitment events to find out if Greek Life is something you’d be interested in. Heck, I really suggest just getting involved in any club or organization. I can guarantee you’re time at UNH will be much more exciting and memorable if you do. Ok, time to study for my biochem exam now!

  22. My opportunity this summer

Sorry I haven’t blogged in a while—my semester has been so overwhelming, and I’m only now just coming out of the majority of my work. Even though the work is starting to ebb, it’s just going to start back up again soon because of finals. I cannot believe the year is almost over! It’s insane! Next semester is my last semester here, and I’m nervous and scared and excited and everything all at once just thinking about it.

This summer I have the wonderful opportunity of service as one of UNH’s President’s Public Service Fellowes. Interested students had to go through an application and interview process in order to gain acceptance into the fellowship. This awesome program places UNH students in various nonprofit positions throughout the New Haven and West Haven community. We get paid by the school and are also given a free room here over the summer, but it’s not completely one-sided: we must keep a weekly journal, have meetings, do a final paper, and present our work to the university community at the beginning of the next school year. It’s going to be a huge change from what I’ve been doing in past summers, but I can’t wait to start.

The weather has been getting warmer and warmer every day, but these random rainy days are really starting to bug me. This past weekend was sooo nice that I just had to go hang out in downtown New Haven. I love just walking around, stopping in at the Yale bookstore and grabbing a coffee. All of the architecture downtown is astounding and I literally walk around with my jaw hanging opening amazement.

To all of the students who have applied to UNH, good luck! Hope to see you next semester!

  23. The Rush of Days

The last few days have been quite crazy on campus, especially for us freshmen, and it will continue to get crazy until the last days of the semester. All the clubs and organizations on campus are selecting their new E-Boards and setting up a direction for next year. For some clubs such as AFC, PIRO and ISA, entire e-boards will be replaced because of graduating seniors and an entirely new approach will be made for next year. Because of my unnaturally large involvement on campus, I will be seeing a lot of changes.

Along with all the extracurricular activities, my stay at the University changes as well. Last Thursday at midnight (or Friday whatever…) I registered for my classes and chose my housing for next year. My classes were okay, no 8am’s, no cluster of like 5 classes in one day and no massive lag from every freshman going on the website at the same time. But my housing is something to work on. I have wanted to live in the apartments on campus, but because of the unexpectedness of more 4-person room combinations than any other this year, all my top choices were taken by other people and I ended up in an off campus apartment. The Regency Apartments, 2 miles from campus, shuttles and/or car on campus required.

Now that isn’t an entirely bad thing because I heard the Regency apartments are luxurious, but the problem I find is that living off campus may negatively impact my involvement on campus. Meeting times and events scattered all about, shuttle back and forth and of course the end of service at midnight, it is crazy. However, I have always wanted to live the ‘typical college life’ where you have your own kitchen and stuff and you have to take a shuttle to class, so I will improvise and I will let you guys know of my experiences when that time comes.

Other than the craziness of planning for next year these few days, there was also a lot of fun. The ISA held its International Festival on Saturday the 18th and it was a success. I don’t know the numbers, but there were probably like 200-300 people in attendance. There were 14 countries being represented from Iran to Nigeria to China to the USA along with a lot of food and culture. Many International students were dressed in their traditional clothing and were walking around, talking to their fellow countrymen and us non International students. It was really cool.

The best parts of the International Festival, I believe, were the entertainment and Malaysia. I was quite surprised when I found out that my family’s country of origin Malaysia was to be represented at the International Festival. I found it overall to be a great presentation with all the food and flyers and I was glad Malaysia won ‘Best Cultural Display’. The entertainment was great as well. From the traditional Lion Dance, this was sweet, to dances from Russia, India to Saudi Arabia. Overall, I liked it a lot and next year, I think I will emcee it, it sounded fun.

In addition to the International Festival, PIRO had its annual ghost investigation. Now I loved it so much as it was so interesting. I got to use the cool equipment from the Infrared Thermometer to the K2 Meter and some of us got some really interesting evidence of the paranormal, from dog growling in a basement to unknown footsteps to some recordings with a little girl’s voice. I want to do more!

And then there was Sunday. A nice lesson to some of you mall-goers, remember that the mall here closes at 6pm on Sundays and remember the UNH shuttle schedules. I took the bus to the mall with my roommate after dinner to look for a good flashlight and voice recorder (all for future PIRO stuff) and we found out all the stores were closed. But when we went outside to wait for a bus, we realized that the bus we took there was actually the last one. Not wanting to gamble to find out if the UNH shuttle was around or not, we decided to pull the unthinkable; we decided to walk from the mall back to UNH. 6 miles, 2 hours, lots of fun. Well, that’s the last time I go to the mall on a Sunday.

As for the days ahead, I can’t wait. Spring Weekend is approaching really quickly with the bands and the carnival. The Six Flags Great Adventure trip is coming up and classes are going to end soon.

    The Summer awaits…

  24. Dropping by to Say Hello

How are you all doing?! I hope all is well. As for me I am doing pretty okay. I loved the weekend. The weather was so beautiful, I went to work mainly but it was still nice to not wear a jacket.
School is almost ending and I am very excited about it but then again I'm not because I feel like the pressure is on! I feel like I study night and day towards the end of the semester. If I'm not studying then I'm writing a paper.

Well I have to go now ... I have to finish these assignments.

  25. Loving the Weather

B-E-A-Utiful!!! That is how I am going to describe this weather we have been having! Everybody stowed away their sweatshirts and sweatpants, and brought out their tank tops and shorts. The Residential Quad has been busy with people playing catch, throwing the Frisbee, or just relaxing in the sun. Accepted Students Days were this weekend, and what a better weekend to visit the campus than this one. All the tours got to see everyone outside having a great time in the nice weather.

The weather has helped many students just de-stress from their school work. It allowed them to just take a breather. I know I was really stressing out about my course load because I have been very ill lately, but the nice weather really helped me relax. I just lied outside for a bit with some friends, and already I could feel a difference.

Also this weekend, our International Students Festival was going on. It was being displayed at North Campus. I did not know that UNH had so many students from different countries. There were students from Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, South America, China, India, Nigeria, and many others. It was just extremely nice to see that there is so much Diversity at UNH.

Well that’s all for now folks! Talk to you soon! Enjoy the weather =]

  26. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Over the past four years, with all the programming that goes on at UNH, I have won the following... An XBOX360, two home phone systems, about two years of antirus computer software, well over $750 in gift cards, and now the cream of the crop...I've won a MacBook!  Just for going to a concert for my cousin's band...Call2Consciousness by the way (why not make a plug for your cousin in your own blog)...and receiving a raffle ticket, I come away with a $1000 laptop.  To sum up a short entry because switching from PC to Mac is quite the task, no matter where you decide to go to college, try to attend as many events the campus puts on.  Because who doesn't like to win free stuff?  Even if it's a $10 giftcard to McDonalds or a $1k laptop, it's something more you came away with.  Plus it's your tuition being put to use, so enjoy it!

  27. The final stretch!

I have felt like it has been the final stretch of the semester for a little while now, and that feeling is getting quite annoying! I am so excited for the summer!

I found out yesterday that I was elected as a Senator of USGA…. so excited! Last night was Fire Science Banquet and that was so much fun. I had a blast! I have a couple of plans for the summer: I reapplied for an Orientation Leader position, I applied for a summer RA position, and I voiced that I was interested in being on staff in the Office of Residential Life during the summer. No matter what the outcome is, I will be staying over the summer months.

The weather has been so nice lately. With each day that passes I find myself itching for summer to get here... it is almost frustrating.

Well that is all for now.

    Happy wishful thinking!

  28. Registration for Classes

Rush, Rush …….. Run; Run it’s that time of the year when every student at UNH is glued to their computers. It’s the time of registration for classes, its time of excitement of knowing which classes are going to be yours and which are not, it’s the time of knowing how fast you can click that mouse and at last, it’s that time of the year where you know how your schedule next semester is going to look like. The moment the clock hits midnight, every student in UNH click their mouse and within one second they get to know if they got the class or not (depending on the internet speed). If you get all your classes, you can jump, play some rocking music and maybe drink some hot chocolate (or coke, diet coke whatever you like). If you don’t get your classes you can always blame it on the I-I-I-I- Internet speed or you can blame it on your m-m-m-m- mouse too. Even though you end up being waitlisted in some of your classes if at the end you talk to the instructors or your advisor, there will still be a ray of hope. I’m going to be a junior next year (yep time flies), so I got all my classes and for once I’m glad to be a junior. When I was a freshman I remember how some girls in the suite next to mine made a countdown video of registration for classes and put it up on face book, it was pretty hilarious (I still look at it and LOL sometimes). Well regardless of getting your classes or not, this is one day that makes everyone a geek and trust me!!!  Small moments like these make a student’s stay at UNH Cherish able and FUN.

  29. I'm on Twitter

It's getting to be that time when out of nowhere, piles of work begin to get thrown at you. I'm home this weekend and next weekend to stay with my dog while my mom is away, and it's probably a good thing so that I can get some work done.  I have to do a "How To" presentation for Monday and I'm thinking I'll do How To Appreciate the Office. Doing this will allow me to watch The Office all weekend so I am not complaining.

Spring Weekend is on its way and we're getting Third Eye Blind! I was very happy when I heard this, it should be a great show. Two nights later I'll be seeing Britney Spears, what a combination. And then four nights later is my birthday, turning the big 2-0. It's wild to think that my teen years are coming to an end. I have a final that night, which I was at first upset about, but I think it will be nice to have that feeling of relief that a class is over on my birthday.

So I hopped on the Twitter bandwagon last night. Being insanely bored and wanting to follow a few people, I gave in. I started to follow Perez Hilton, I cannot get enough of him. I'm of course following Britney, as well as John McCain's daughter Meghan, she's awesome. I added Nicole Richie to the list but I don't think it's really her. UNH also has a Twitter page that I tracked down so I added that as well. I know there are various clubs and organizations on campus, also, so I'll have to find them.

Last night a few of my roommates and I went to this place in downtown New Haven called Keys to the City. It was so much fun, they have dueling pianos and when one of the musicians isn't playing, he goes on drums while the other is on piano. There were a lot of UNH students there and we all just sang along to the requests - believe me, these guys know every song there is. I'm definitely looking forward to going again.

  30. Again, MADNESS! Or Just class Registration. . .

After the battle of the bands on Wednesday night, I had to rush back to my dorm to register for my classes for next fall. This is usually a crazy time, simply because everyone in a particular graduating class logs on to Matrix at the same time, and picks their classes at the same time. It’s crazy!

My class, (sophomore class) has a register time of Thursday at 12:01 AM, which means we move all of our classes to our “cart” online about a week in advance, and we stay up until all night, just to hit “register” as soon as the clock strikes 12:01AM. If you’re confused, don’t worry, it really isn’t too hard. . . it’s just kinda frustrating. Especially if you don’t get into all of your classes the first time around. Then you have to stay up even later to rearrange your schedule.

For the first time in my 2 years of being here. . . I finally got into all of my classes on the first try! I’m stoked!

    Record Label Update:

Alright, so this record label is GOING TO HAPPEN! I’m determined, as is most of the music department. I sent in the business plan to the music department yesterday. It will be presented at the staff meeting on Friday, and then I’ll finally get a word on whether or not the department will help us out. I’m pretty sure they will help us. They’re as excited as I am!

But just in case, keep your fingers crossed! :o)
