The University of New Haven (UNH) is boldly entering the world of experiential learning as it applies to the business of fun. Sport management, tourism administration, and hospitality management are all focused on providing customers with exceptional experiences that enrich their lives and provide a release from everyday stresses. Whether repelling down a mountain, exploring nature, taking in a game, or riding a roller coaster we all have fun in different ways and UNH is interested in exposing their students to the industry in a meaningful way. Over several days (August 18-25) students will be learning first hand what is involved in providing exceptional guest service and how to market fun. Working along-side industry professionals, students will be forced to think about and use their finance, marketing, accounting, human resource, and risk management skills on a daily basis. Before the trip, students will review an introductory text and write a paper about what they think experiential entertainment entails. Through keeping daily diaries and a final paper, students will be evaluated based on whether they understand what experiential entertainment entails and how to effectively deliver it to paying customers. Professor Gil Fried will be facilitating the class and will be working side-by-side with the students. We are currently examining various locales where we will stay and work, but the Lake George Area appears the location where the students can work at the largest variety of locations without having to travel too far. The course will also bring in a number of guest speakers and executive to help explain why different decisions and actions were taken.
It is estimated that the class will cost about $1,000 more than a traditional three credit class and will include all housing and meal costs. Students will be responsible for reading a textbook before the trip, keep a journal during the trip, and turn in a paper at the beginning and end of the trip. | ||||||||

Not only does health care have a major influence on public budgets, it has a great deal of impact ranging from the price of a car to land fill and other disposal issues.
