This course will provide an overview of United States National Security Policy and Strategy.  Students will examine the structure, role, and processes employed by the executive and legislative branches of government as well as agencies and departments that comprise the national security community relative to developing and executing national security strategies and implementing policies.  Through examination of various national strategies (US National Security Strategy, US Homeland Security Strategy, National Intelligence Strategy, National Military Strategy, etc.), this review will provide an overview of the national security process and its relationship to national security operations, decision making and architecture.  It opens up discussion of some of the controversial issues relating to the future of U.S. National Security policy and strategy in the 21st Century.

This course is intended to introduce students to intelligence analysis methods.  Students will study and practice the use of time lines, argument analysis.They will study how to frame an intelligence question, weighing evidence, and construct warning and indicator lists.  They will also use contrarian methods and conduct analysis of competing hypotheses.  These techniques will be practiced in class and applied to an instructor approved research project.  This class will require students to work in teams because most of these techniques are best done as groups.

This course will examine the efforts undertaken to prevent hostile intelligence organizations from collecting, analyzing and interpreting information the purpose of which is to disrupt the target agency or government.  Emphasis will be placed on the 16 agencies of the American Intelligence Community (IC) as well as the Intelligence agencies of the U.S. and the foreign services of several other nations.
