Spanish - Undergraduate Courses

SP 101-102 Elementary Spanish I and II (back to previous page)
Focuses on the fundamental principles of grammar. Extensive vocabulary and pronunciation exercises. In SP 102 aural comprehension and pronunciation are tested by oral examination. 3 credit hours per term.

SP 201-202 Intermediate Spanish I and II (back to previous page)
Prerequisites: SP 101-102 or equivalent. Stresses the reading comprehension of modern prose texts and a review of grammar necessary for this reading. Students are encouraged to read in their own areas of interest. 3 credit hours per term.

SP 301 Advanced Spanish (back to previous page)
Prerequisite: SP 202 or comparable proficiency level as demonstrated in consultation with the instructor.  This course is intended to develop students' proficiencies in speaking, writing, listening, and reading so that they can be at a level necessary for advanced literature and culture courses.  It will emphasize composition and oral discussion as well as concepts necessary for a sophisticated appraisal of literature and culture in the target language.  This course will be conducted in the target language.  3 credit hours.

SP 401 Latin American Culture through Literature and the Media (back to previous page)
Prerequisite:  SP 301 or comparable proficiency as demonstrated in consultation with the instructor.  This course is a comprehensive exposure to essential Latin American cultural issues and patterns as they have developed historically.  It will study how these issues manifest through representative works of literature as well as popular and highbrow cultural media such as music and film.  The course will also provide a unique opportunity to produce in-depth cultural and literary analyzes via oral discussion and written essays.  Students will perform select written and oral activities in Spanish.  3 credit hours.

Prerequisite: Consent of faculty member and department chair. Opportunity for the student, under the direction of a faculty member, to explore an area of interest. This course must be initiated by the student. 1-3 credit hours.
