The UNH Office of Experiential Education (OEE) serves undergraduates, graduate students and alumni. We strive to provide students with tools for self-exploration and success long after they leave UNH. Among the programs covered under experiential education are internships and co-ops, academic service learning, study abroad and faculty-sponsored research.
Q: Are first year students welcome at the OEE?
A: Absolutely! Ideally career planning should begin the student's first year.
Q: Does UNH have an internship program?
A: Yes. Experience is immensely important to a career success plan. Experiential education programs that enrich the academic experience and develop career and life skills are essential for success in students' professional, community and personal lives. Some schools require internships. Internships are encouraged for all students, even those in programs that don't require such work experiences.
Q: Can first year students get internships?
A: Absolutely. It is not uncommon for strong-minded, determined, capable first year students to get internships There are nay-sayers but the fact is that many do. First-year students often already have some work experience though not related to their majors, obviously. The fact that they are have a work ethic and are seeking an internship is admirable and may be the difference between success and failure. The sooner one starts getting degree-related work experience the sooner one can begin to decide what specific area s/he is interested in and even which company one prefers. A different internship each year provides a strong foundation and will result in a much stronger, qualified graduating senior.
Q: What types of employers hire UNH Interns?
A: The OEE and individual faculty have established partnerships with employers representing all areas of industry, social service, non-profit and government. We aim to introduce as many of our disciplines to our business partners as possible. For instance, if a company normally hires our talented engineering or computer science majors, we also inquire about human resources or accounting or other types of opportunities. We want to be sure our students have access to as many opportunities as possible and that our partner employers have access to the many talents of UNH students.
Q: Who is eligible for internships?
A: A student who has completed her or his first year and is in good academic standing with the university is eligible to intern. (Transfer students need to have completed at least one semester at UNH.) Some companies may have higher academic standards so it stands to strive to have as high a gpa as possible.
Q: Does OEE post jobs on bulletin boards?
A: The Career Center posts jobs on Blackboard, the same site where class information is posted. Postings include where the position is located as well as how interested applicants should apply. Many individual departments maintain classic bulletin boards as well.
Q: Does participation in experiential education affect future job potential?
A: Absolutely! Surveys show that students who participated in internships were 48% more likely to have been offered a position than students who participated in part-time jobs not sponsored by the University.
Q: How can I get more information?
A: Access our website and stop by the Office of Experiential Education, 2nd Floor, Maxcy Hall 214.
