Executive Officers

The senior administrative officers of the university and certain biographical information with respect thereto are as follows:

University of New Haven President Steven H. Kaplan 

Dr. Steven H. Kaplan, President

Dr. Kaplan has been President since July 2004.  He completed his PhD in comparative literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität (Germany) and holds the Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German, and English) from the same university.  Dr. Kaplan also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.  He has been an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division; a Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität; Instructor of English, English Department Chair and Director of the Center for International Studies at the University of Southern Colorado; Dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY-Buffalo College; Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University; and Chancellor at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.  Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Marie Rilke, a number of scholarly essays, a book on Tim O'Brien's fiction, and an anthology of international war stories.

University of New Haven Julia Parker

Mr. Thomas E. Beebe, Vice President for Facilities

Thomas Beebe is the Vice President of Facilities at the University of New Haven. After joining UNH in July 2009, as the associate vice president for Capital Projects, Beebe successfully managed the remodeling and construction of a number of UNH facilities, including The Henry C. Lee Institute building. As vice president, Beebe is responsible for all facilities-related matters and oversight of campus police and transportation at the university. Prior to joining UNH, Beebe assisted the university in program management for several years as the director of business development for Petra Construction Corporation. He has over 30 years of experience in facilities planning, project management, facilities management and construction. Previously, Beebe was an officer at Aetna Inc., having spent 22 years in the corporate office in a variety of real estate positions.

University of New Haven David P. Dauwalder

Dr. David P. Dauwalder, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs

Dr. Dauwalder began his duties as Provost in April 2006.  Dr. Dauwalder completed his PhD in a program that combined study in business administration, business education, secondary education, and educational research at Arizona State University.  Dr. Dauwalder also holds a Master of Arts degree from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Arizona University.  He has been an Assistant Professor of Administrative Services at Central Michigan University; a Professor in the Department of Office Systems and Business Education at California State University, Los Angeles; a Professor of Business Communication at Central Washington University; and a Professor of Management at California State University, Stanislaus.  His administrative roles have included Acting Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Department Chair, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Resources, and Acting Dean of the School of Business & Economics at California State University, Los Angeles.  Additionally, Dr. Dauwalder served as Dean of the School of Business & Economics and Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Central Washington University.  Dr. Dauwalder most recently served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Stanislaus.

University of New Haven: Margaret Jablonski Dr. Margaret Jablonski, Vice President for Student Affairs

Margaret Jablonski joined the University of New Haven as Vice President for Student Affairs on August 1, 2010. Dr. Jablonski has nearly 30 years of experience in higher education. Before joining UNH, she served as vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, one of the premier public universities in the United States. At UNC-Chapel Hill, Jablonski oversaw student life for approximately 17,500 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students. Her areas of responsibility included housing and residential education, campus health services, counseling and wellness services, student judicial affairs, and Greek life . Prior to joining UNC-Chapel Hill in 2004, Jablonski served as dean for campus life at Brown University, the associate vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Connecticut, associate dean for undergraduate education and student affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and assistant dean for residential services at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and her doctorate in education at Boston University.

University of New Haven caroline Koziatek

Mrs. Caroline Koziatek, Vice President of Human Resources, Title IX Coordinator and Diversity Officer

Caroline Vitale Koziatek '92 M.B.A. joined the University of New Haven in August 2007 as Associate Vice President for Human Resources and was promoted to Vice President in 2010. An accomplished professional with over 23 years of service in human resources, Koziatek is known as a skilled coach, a master at acquiring top talent and a respected team builder. Most recently, Koziatek was vice president of commercial and consumer strategic business for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in North Haven, Conn., where she served for more than 16 years. Previously, she held positions in quality and customer service for Applied Data Processing, Inc. in North Haven, Conn. and in operations and control for the former Macy's in New Haven, Conn. She holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Bryant University and a master's degree in business administration from the University of New Haven.

University of New Haven VinceMangiacapra

Dr. James S. McCoy, Vice President for Enrollment Management

James McCoy first joined the University of New Haven in December, 2009, as interim Vice President for Student Success, where he oversaw graduate and international admissions as well as University College. He was appointed Vice President for Enrollment Management effective June, 2010. McCoy previously served as the vice provost for enrollment management, planning and policy at Louisiana State University (LSU). While at LSU, McCoy provided leadership in the strategic development of policies and planning to positively affect enrollment, overseeing the offices of undergraduate admission and student aid, registrar, and continuing education. In addition, he developed the Pelican Promise Financial Aid program and a university-wide, five-year strategic enrollment plan. Prior to LSU, McCoy served as the associate vice president for enrollment management at Xavier University in Ohio. Previously, he worked for Miami University in Ohio, where he began his career as the director of admission and financial aid and ultimately served as the associate vice president for enrollment services. In addition, he worked at Pennsylvania State University, first as a faculty member and later as director of marketing and recruitment for undergraduate admissions. McCoy earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and both his master’s and doctoral degrees from Penn State.

University of New Haven George S. Synodi

Mr. George S. Synodi, Vice President for Finance

Mr. Synodi has been Vice President for Finance and Treasurer since October 2002.  He received his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Connecticut School of Business.  Mr. Synodi served as Chief Financial Officer for three Connecticut public education school districts from 1983 to 1989, and as Assistant Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) in Hartford, Connecticut from 1989 to 2002.  Mr. Synodi served as an expert financial witness in the landmark Connecticut school desegregation case, Sheff vs. O'Neill.

Mr. Richard J. Tuchman, Vice President for University Advancement

Richard J. Tuchman joined the University of New Haven as Vice President for University Advancement in July, 2008. A prominent Connecticut fundraising professional, Tuchman previously served as the Executive Director of Development at the University of Hartford. During his previous 22 years as an advancement officer, Tuchman served as an executive in the Development and Advancement offices at Yale University, Saint Joseph College, Quinnipiac University and at the American Heart Association, and began his career with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the team that completed the University of Hartford’s $175-million capital campaign, led a successful $30-million campaign at Saint Joseph College and directed the Quinnipiac University Development Office for four years. Tuchman is a certified fund-raising executive and graduate of Cornell University with a master’s in journalism from Quinnipiac University.
