Experiential Education Day Award Winners.
The Academic Service-Learning Office recognized a student, faculty member, and community partner for excellence in service-learning during Experiential Education Day on Tuesday April 19, 2011.
Each of the following award recipients have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to excellence in service-learning.
Student: Erin Couto
Erin has participated, and excelled, in the Community Work Study program for the past two years. Through the program she works at New Haven Reads, a non-profit organization geared towards improving the literacy of youth in the Greater New Haven Area. Erin has also continued to volunteer her time at Common Ground High School after taking Juvenile Justice as an Academic Service-Learning Course.
Faculty: Renee Prajer
Since becoming a Service-Learning Scholar Renee has seamlessly incorporated service-learning into two of her Dental Hygiene courses, DH 462 Dental Hygiene Internship and the DH 468 Dental Hygiene Senior Project. These courses have taken students many places—quite literally! Renee and her students have traveled to Roatan, Honduras and to Eagle Butte, South Dakota. This year she will travel to two new sites in Arizona and North Carolina.
Community Partner: Lana Puleo from the Federal Correctional Institute in Danbury, CT
Lana coordinates a dental hygiene clinical rotation at the FCI. She helps students complete background checks and the needed paperwork to complete their rotations. Lana provides students with an orientation, schedules patients for the class, and takes students on a tour of the prison.
Lana also travels to UNH to assist in DH 455 Public Health where she explains many career options available to the Dental Hygiene students: US Public Health Service, National Health Service Corps, etc. Lana also teaches a class in DH 461 Oral Medicine where she provides a lecture on “Meth Mouth.”
