This course explains the ideology, growth and organizational structure of the EU and highlights the tremendous importance of EU-US cooperation and the establishment of a tarif-free market between the EU and the southern Mediterranean African and Middle Eastern nations under the Barcelona process. Through an analytical process of developing criteria for judging the stakes and challenges of European integration, this course provides an overview of the history, principles, structure, functions, processes and current issues of European integration with a particular emphasis on France's role in, and her response to, European integration. Prerequisite: one course in recent European politics or history is advised. Credits: 3
POL350 Human Rights: Universal Principles in World Politics
Following an initial review of the historical, political and intellectual backgrounds giving rise to modern human rights law, this course provides a survey and analysis of the process and many challenges of setting, monitoring, and enforcing universal standards of respect for international human rights in contemporary world politics. Primary focus is placed upon the UN system. Prerequisites: one introductory course in international relations and one course in 20th century world history or European history are advised. POL360 Contemporary Spain: History, Politics & Society
In this course, we will discuss and explore Spain’s ascension after the military Francoist dictatorship while critically examining challenges that the country currently faces. Throughout this course, students will analyze and interpret the most important aspects of Spanish history, politics and society from the last 30 years. Credits: 3

POL370 New Challenges in Global Politics: Time for Change?
This course analyzes the social, political and economic challenges- such as climate change, natural resource conflicts, human rights violations or unfair trade rules- that make up the planet’s global agenda. In order to address these subjects, the course will consider the opinions of both established mainstream analysts and those leftfield “alternative” views from academic fields, NGOs and social movements.
