MUS220 Introduction to Music: Learning to Listen
This course provides a survey of Western musical practice and how this music is shaped by the changes in philosophical thought. It also presents music as a representation of our concerns as a society and aims to uncover the often hidden capacity of music to capture the ontological experience of the composer. Prerequisite: some experience with music is recommended. Credits: 3
MUS320 Desire & Identity: Gender & Sexuality in Italian Opera
This interdisciplinary course explores gender and sexuality in Italian Opera, paying special attention to the complexity of obsessions, fandom, history, performances, recordings, extravagant gestures, divas and sexuality. Classes include attendance at live performances at the Opera House of Florence and at the studios of an Italian costume designer. Prerequisites: None. Language of instruction: English. Credits: 3
