Hands-On Research Prepares Forensic Science and Biology Major for Medical School

Experiential Learning

Sarah Markland ’17 says forensic science is like solving a puzzle.

“And I love solving puzzles,” she said. “That’s how I came to the conclusion that I want to be a forensic pathologist.”

She spent the summer participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, working alongside her mentor Claire Glynn, associate professor of forensic science, studying the co-extraction of micro RNA and DNA, a process critical to examining crime scenes.

“This wasn't done in the past because it was said that it was impossible,” she said. “My interest in biology has just started.”
