Internship Program

The internship program is intended to enrich the academic experience of undergraduate students through a structured work-learning program. Each internship must involve a partnership between faculty, staff and employers/organizations to provide the student intern with an optimal experience.  The program is not for credit and is required of all students.

Goals of Internship Program
  • To facilitate successful partnerships that are mutually beneficial to the student, participating industry, and the ECECS Department.
  • To provide students with applied experience related to computer engineering that complements classroom learning.
  • To encourage students to interact, network, and collaborate.
  • To develop creative and rewarding internship-related activities that encourage students to participate and excel.
  • To enhance participating students’ independence, responsibility, and self-confidence.
  • To assist students in gaining experience with interpersonal relationship, cooperation with co-workers, and communication skills.
  • To create opportunities for the exchange of ideas, research and expertise between students, faculty and employers.

Benefits of Internships

  • Internships provide an opportunity to translate classroom knowledge to the professional work environment and to learn from seasoned professionals.
  • Interns gain professional experience that can be included on a resume.  They are able to experience various opportunities before making a long-term commitment, and they can begin to develop a professional network.
  • Fifty to seventy percent of employers hire their interns for permanent positions, and starting salaries for former interns are about ten percent higher than for students who did not complete an internship.
  • "… employers rate having had an internship to be more important than grade point average, leadership qualities or technical skills" -Career Opportunity News-
Internship Program Guidelines
  • The internship program requires a minimum of 300 hours performing engineering-related duties relevant to computer engineering.
  • The internship position begins after the student has completed at least 60 credit hours toward a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering (CEN).
  • The internship is not for credit. A grade of Satisfactory will be recorded on student’s transcript after the successful completion of the internship. All CEN students are required to fulfill their internship obligations prior to graduation.
  • To find an appropriate internship placement, students may utilize the SEAS Co-op office or the University’s Career Development and Co-op Education office along with leads provided by various industries.
  • The ECECS department/internship coordinator must approve all internship positions.
  • Students may use their co-op positions, summer employment, and relevant part-time or full-time positions to fulfill their internship requirement. In such cases, the request by the student should include documentation such as the type of experience and the duration. Approval is granted only after a review process is completed by the department/internship coordinator and the student’s employer(s).
  • The internship requirement may be waived for those students who are employed part time or full time in relevant fields. Any waiver or substitution will be granted only after a review process is completed by the department/internship coordinator. A request for waiver is initiated by the student one year prior to his or her anticipated graduation date.
