Sustainability Studies

About the Program

Sustainability is a broad concept that has become preeminent for the twenty-first century global society. The discipline deals with understanding and balancing the ubiquitous need for growth and well-being of human societies within a global environment where natural resources become ever more limiting. Sustainability science is an emerging discipline that seeks to
  • understand their interactions between natural, social, and economic systems, the complex mechanisms that lead to the degradation of these systems, and the associated risks to human well-being and security and
  • provide the vision and methodology that will lead to the restoration and harmonization of these systems

This academic program, B.S. in Sustainability Studies, is designed to prepare students to face the challenges of applying sustainable principles and practices in a variety of professional positions in industry, government, and academia. The curriculum of the program conforms to three fundamental guiding principles:
  • It is transdisciplinary
  • It is based on integrated/holistic analysis of the systems involved and
  • It cultivates skills and attitudes aimed at practical action
