Program Objectives and Outcomes

This unique program exposes the student to a broad diversity of academic disciplines that are vital to understanding and creating solutions for this social and environmental challenge, including natural and social sciences, business, engineering and the humanities. The curriculum seeks to provide a diverse background that links effectively the knowledge, skills, and values of these disciplines. Emphasis is placed upon using practical, hands-on, and in-and out-of-classroom experiences that enable the successful graduate to effectively understand, live, and work within a global world that is significantly different from the past. In addition, students have the opportunity to select from a variety of upper level electives according to their personal and professional interests and aspirations. A mandatory internship or field experience provides "real life" exposure to sustainability challenges. A sequence of two capstone courses interweaves transdisciplinary knowledge and practical problem-solving experiences. Graduates of the program will be able to:
  • Analyze, interpret, and formulate ecological/environmental systems including natural cycles, social and environmental pollution effects, and global environmental issues.
  • Assess and apply sustainability principles and practices in the natural and human environment including sustainable procurement, carbon management, and life cycle assessment.
  • Recognize and demonstrate the use of engineering and technology principles and practices related to sustainable systems including green engineering, energy management and efficiency, transportation, the built environment, waste management, pollution prevention, and pollution control.
  • Identify and illustrate the use of economic principles and business management practices in sustainable living including strategies, city/government operations, project management, business/program development and marketing, budgeting and scheduling, and negotiation skills.
  • Recognize and value the ethical, legal, regulatory, and professional dimensions of sustainable living.
  • Utilize effectively information technology in the analysis, design, and operation of sustainable systems including advanced PC skills, office and internet applications, CAD, basic programming, and sustainability software.
  • Develop and cultivate intra- and inter-personal skills including analytical, problem solving, communication, collaboration, leadership, time management, organization, and life-long learning skills.
