Bachelor of Arts

The University of New Haven offers a bachelor’s degree in English, a broad field of study that provides a breadth and depth of liberal education as it also improves one’s thinking, writing, and speaking skills. An English major may choose the literature concentration, the writing concentration, or both.  The Literature concentration requires ten literature courses.  These are selected from four required categories, each offering the student personal choices. The writing concentration requires six writing courses, ranging from applied writing to creative writing, and four literature courses. The College of Arts and Sciences also offers an interdisciplinary minor in Black Studies, which is housed in the English Department.

Unique Features

  • Concentrations are available in literature and writing.
  • Our flexible program allows students to choose a course of study that relates to their individual interests. The English program includes more than a dozen free electives. In consultation with an academic adviser, students plan a course schedule for each semester that balances University core requirements, the English major requirements, and individual interests. There is room for students to minor in another subject, take a double major, or simply explore their interests.
  • Class size in major courses averages fifteen students, and every one of our full-time faculty teaches courses in the major.
  • Faculty are readily available to give advice about courses, career plans, and academic or personal  concerns. Every student is encouraged to participate in class discussions, ask questions, and learn to interact with others more effectively.
