West Haven, Conn, March 30, 2010 - The University of New Haven (UNH) student chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association (ACJA) brought home a host of awards from the American Criminal Justice Association National Conference in Portland, Oregon, held March 15 to 19. The UNH chapter, consisting of 15 students and their faculty adviser, Criminal Justice Instructor Danny Maxwell, brought home awards for their accomplishments in competitions including firearms, juvenile justice and corrections.
ACJA is a national professional and pre-professional organization with goals that include improved technology, training, and service for the benefit of the criminal justice system. The club offers students a variety of activities including community service and the opportunity to meet and work with practitioners in the field. Students meet others with similar interests and are eligible to participate in regional and national programs and activities.
Noting the students' accomplishments at the event, Maxwell says, "Every student worked extremely hard the entire week and represented themselves and our university as complete professionals. Their teamwork and spirit was unmatched and was an inspiration to the rest of the 300 participants. He adds, "I am so proud of this group of students, and the entire club that worked so hard to get us there to compete."
Robert Hanson '10, president of the UNH ACJA chapter noted the groups fundraising efforts for the trip over the last six months says, "I have never seen such a professional, talented and more dedicated group of students. They achieved their goals and, in the process, created a national awareness of what UNH teaches its students. "
