Over his thirty year career, Joe has received multiple awards of recognition at the municipal, state, federal and private agency levels, for line of duty and community based actions.

Joe is active in volunteer work at the United States Veteran's Administration Hospital.

He was a member of the Board of Directors for Continuum of Care, a residential program for persons with disabilities, and acted as Vice President of the Holding Company.

Joe Polio has spent 30 years in local law enforcement. He joined the university staff after his retirement as a patrol captain in the Uniformed Services Division, New Haven CT. Serving as a lieutenant in Human Resources, he directed investigative teams and screened candidates for police service. While a lieutenant, he supervised the Central Communications Service.

Joe was an integral member of Community Oriented Policing team, acting as a District Manager in three distinctly different communities, from its inception, until his promotion to the administrative position of Captain.

The Sergeant rank, as a street supervisor, was followed by appointment to the position as Administrative Aide to the Chief, where he fielded second level traffic prior to a response by the chief, evaluated threats with state and federal agencies and served as liaison between government officials and police administrators.

Joe started as a patrol officer in 1969, attended the university full time, and was later assigned to the Division of Education and Personnel as a police instructor.

He was a charter member and later coordinator of the New Haven Police Stress Unit for 24 years, a peer counseling team that assisted department members in crisis.

As a police officer, he was a charter member of the Hostage Negotiation and SWAT Teams.
