  • Over his thirty year career, Joe has received multiple awards of recognition at the municipal, state, federal and private agency levels, for line of duty and community based actions.

  •  Joe is active in volunteer work at the United States Veteran's Administration Hospital.

  •  He was a member of the Board of Directors for Continuum of Care, a residential program for persons with disabilities, and acted as Vice President of the Holding Company.

Other

  • Joe Polio has spent 30 years in local law enforcement.  He joined the university staff after his retirement as a patrol captain in the Uniformed Services Division, New Haven CT. Serving as a lieutenant in Human Resources, he directed investigative teams and screened candidates for police service.  While a lieutenant, he supervised the Central Communications Service.

  • Joe was an integral member of Community Oriented Policing team, acting as a District Manager in three distinctly different communities, from its inception, until his promotion to the administrative position of Captain.

  • The Sergeant rank, as a street supervisor, was followed by appointment to the position as Administrative Aide to the Chief, where he fielded second level traffic prior to a response by the chief, evaluated threats with state and federal agencies and served as liaison between government officials and police administrators.

  • Joe started as a patrol officer in 1969, attended the university full time, and was later assigned to the Division of Education and Personnel as a police instructor.

  • He was a charter member and later coordinator of the New Haven Police Stress Unit for 24 years, a peer counseling team that assisted department members in crisis. 

  • As a police officer, he was a charter member of the Hostage Negotiation and SWAT Teams.
