There will soon be a groundbreaking at UNH.
But the earthmovers and dozers that start excavating for UNH’s new residence hall won’t be the only ones breaking ground. The actual design of the 350-bed residence is also pretty groundbreaking. It will fundamentally change how residents live and interact with each other.
It's all about the pod.
The design calls for communities of 16 students centered on a living learning space with entries into double-occupancy rooms organized around it.
UNH is already known for its Living Learning Communities, which group students of similar majors and interests together in residence halls. The pod design takes the Living Learning concept to the next level. As well as giving students more space to gather and socialize, the pod design’s common lounge area is an ideal place for faculty members to come in and speak to students directly — cozy, yet out in the open.

Residents aren't the only ones who can look forward to the new facility with eager anticipation.
Although the top three stories of the building are residential units, the ground floor provides amenities to the University at large as well. A 250-280 seat dining room, common lounge spaces, office space for UNH personnel, and 2,300 square feet of classroom space with state-of-the-art technology will be open to everyone.
This new residence hall promises to create a dynamic hub of activity on campus — which is precisely what UNH President Steven Kaplan and Student Life stakeholders envisioned.
An impressive 90,000 square feet, the facility will sit at the southwest corner of UNH’s main campus near Celentano Residence Hall (formerly Soundview) and Kayo Field and is expected to be move-in ready for the fall of 2014.
UNH received all the necessary approvals for construction from the City of West Haven and construction began in the fall of 2013, with an anticipated completion date of August 2014. The project was designed in partnership with Capstone Development Partners, LLC of Birmingham, Alabama, and The Design Collective, Inc., of Baltimore, Maryland. The project will be constructed by Consigli Construction Company of Milford, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut.
