The bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies serves students whose needs are not met by traditional university majors. The interdisciplinary nature of this program permits students to integrate courses from several disciplines for the achievement of personalized educational goals. Those goals may be directed toward the realization of specific career objectives not met by an existing program. The Liberal Studies program also meets the needs of students who wish to develop a career focus and learn in a manner that emphasizes the interrelatedness of knowledge. 

Unique Features

  • The bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies allows students to develop individualized programs of study through a broad-based education in liberal arts and sciences. The program also promotes the acquisition of practical knowledge and skills required by the job market. Subject to specific guidelines, students select 16 of their courses in two of the following focus areas:

    Humanities
    : communication, english, foreign languages, history, music, philosophy

    Social/Behavioral Sciences
    : economics, political science, psychology, sociology, legal studies

    Visual/Performing Arts
    : art, graphic design, interior design, music, theater

    Mathematics & Natural/General Sciences
    : biology, chemistry, environmental science, marine biology, mathematics, physics
  • This program is ideal for students who want to integrate the experience of studying in another country with their curriculum at UNH.
  • Our interdisciplinary approach to learning allows students to design an elective portion of the program to meet their specific goals.
  • Students may work closely with the liberal studies adviser to design the elective portion of their program.
  • Flexibility for returning or transfer students allows maximum use of prior credits to be transferred toward the degree; in many cases up to 90 credits with satisfactory grades earned at an approved institution may be applied.
  • The program enables students to mold prior college work into a cohesive degree program.
