Global Studies

Global Studies, B.A.

”Globalization is not a phenomenon . . . (or) some passing trend . . . it is an overarching international system shaping the domestic politics and foreign relations of virtually every country.”

-Thomas Friedman, author of The World is Flat

The major in global studies is designed for motivated students interested in expanding their horizons and career opportunities. Given ever-increasing globalization in almost every field of study, we offer an interdisciplinary approach to global studies. Business, communication and culture have gone truly global, and global studies focuses on the connections and trends between nations and people. It is necessary to be fully aware of these connections in order to develop cultural understandings and to become responsible global citizens.

Unique Features

  • The first two years of the program include a series of interdisciplinary global studies courses using a case-study approach. For instance, one case-study is the Kyoto Treaty from political, economic and environmental perspectives.
  • We offer the opportunity to earn a double major so that you pair the global studies major with study in a specific academic discipline.
  • You can become proficient in another language by interacting with native speakers in one of six languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Russian or Spanish.
  • We offer study abroad in over twenty sites around the world including Eastern and Western Europe, Latin America, Russia and China.
  • You may include a meaningful internship or experiential education component while studying abroad. For instance, intern with a multinational company, a law office, a theatre, or gallery in another country.
  • Students majoring in global studies have the opportunity to live together in a “learning community” in a residence hall on campus.
