The Capstone Option is another of the pre-certification options at UNH. By enrolling in this option, teacher candidates attend classes at night, but have limited field experiences during the day. This allows students who are working professionals or who have other daytime responsibilities to work towards their master's degree and teaching certification at the same time. Students in this program can attend classes full time usually three times per week, for one calendar year, either September - June, or January - December. However, Capstone Candidates generally take courses at their own pace while paying for their coursework.
The University allows students a maximum of five years to complete the program for certification and the degree. After coursework and three minimal field experiences are completed, in addition to required exams, successful Capstone candidates will earn a Master of Science Degree in Education. After the Master's Degree is completed, an additional 13 weeks of student teaching is required to gain CT State certification. This is a supervised university field experience that candidates must pay for directly, and that must be taken full-time by all students wishing to be certified.
