Students must have:
1. An undergraduate degree in a content field for elementary and a degree or 30 credits in a content area + 9 credits in no more than 3 related areas for secondary. Secondary majors must comply with course Requirements/competencies as well.
2. A minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.7. Only grades of "C" or better will be accepted for all courses. For those applicants whose GPA is less than 2.7, there is a GPA Waiver Policy and Application.
3. Passed Praxis I or have waiver letter based on SAT, ACT, or GRE scores. Praxis I is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). We suggest that you register to take this three-part exam as soon as possible or apply for a waiver.
UNH offers the administration of PRAXIS I, PRAXIS II and PLT exams on campus. Individuals may register for these exams on the Educational Testing Service Website at: http://www.ets.org/praxis and during the registration process, select the University of New Haven as the preferred testing center.
Praxis I Waiver Application that can be obtained from the State Website:
http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/PDF/Cert/certform/ed_192.pdf
4. Passed the appropriate Praxis II or ACTFL examinations if applying as a secondary major in accordance with the following Department policy:
"Candidates wishing to be certified as teachers in secondary education (any subject) must, as a condition of admission, have either: a) taken and passed the corresponding Praxis II or ACTFL subject exam by the start of the first program course or b) be scheduled to take the exam by the start of the first program course.
Candidates must have passed the exam no later than the deadline for their respective student teaching application cycle".
The paper based Praxis II examination is administered on seven dates in the year and your scores will not be available for 3-4 weeks from the date of test administration. Some Praxis II examinations are offered in a computer-delivered format and are given by appointment. For more information on computer-delivered test dates, please see www.ets.org/praxis/register.
Because Praxis II is an entrance requirement for secondary candidates, applicants should schedule the test early enough to meet the application deadline for your respective program start date. Exceptions to this policy may be granted for special circumstances, but in no case will candidates be allowed to apply for student teaching until they have passed the examination.
5. Taken General Education prerequisites as listed below. Students may begin the program with two or fewer outstanding undergraduate prerequisites. All students must have a minimum of 39 General Education credits.
