NCATE and Accreditation

The Graduate Education Department at the University of New Haven is preparing for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation review visit during the Spring of 2012.  In 2007, all Education programs were approved for state accreditation by the Connecticut State Department of Education using NCATE standards for program approval. The 2012 review, if successful, will recognize the UNH programs nationally.

We value and respect the accreditation process, as it provides the department with an opportunity to engage in serious self-study and reflection.  NCATE accreditation aims to ensure that the accredited institutions produce competent, caring and qualified teachers who can help all students learn.  UNH has enjoyed a long and rich history of preparing quality teaching professionals who will educate future generations.

The strength of our education faculty, programs and school partnerships, coupled with our emphasis on rigorous entrance requirements, small classes, field experiences across urban-suburban and rural schools, and assessments linked to best practices makes UNH distinct, and showcases our commitment to preparing highly qualified candidates who are highly competent to serve in diverse communities. The results of the accreditation visit will allow us to grow as a department and continue to improve the quality of our teacher candidates and, subsequently improve student learning and enhance the learning environment in the P-12 school systems.

NCATE creates rigorous standards for teacher education programs in schools, colleges, and departments of education.  The mission of the organization is to provide accountability and improvement for quality teacher preparation today, tomorrow, and for the next century.  To learn more about NCATE, visit http://www.ncate.org.
