About

    Dr. Stuart Sidle joined UNH as the I/O Psychology Program Coordinator and as a full-time faculty member in the autumn of 2003. As the Program Coordinator, he is always willing to discuss the program and student's professional goals.

    Dr. Sidle was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Lacking the talent to become a rock star or the athletic ability to become a professional baseball player, he decided to move to Chicago to pursue the rewarding field of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. As an I/O Psychologist, he has worked as a full-time academic and as a management consultant. The professional accomplishments that he is most proud of are the teaching awards received at Saint Xavier University and at DePaul University’s Graduate School of Business.

    The two greatest influences on Dr. Sidle's approach to teaching, research and consulting were his graduate school professors from the DePaul University I/O Psychology program and his improvisational theater teachers that he trained with in Chicago. While earning his Ph.D in I/O Psychology in Chicago, he was studying and performing with several improvisational theater troops. The skills needed to succeed as an improv troop are similar to the ones organizational leaders need to manage teams and to inspire workplace innovation. Many of the exercises he uses when training managers or teaching MBA students and I/O Psychology students are based on techniques used to develop improvisational theater teams. In addition, he has conducted and presented several research studies on the topic of workplace humor. 

    Dr. Sidle's primary teaching interests are in the areas of organizational behavior, change management, leadership and human resource management. In all of his courses he tries to create a learning environment that inspires respect, creativity, and even some fun. He also enjoy designing and delivering workshops for business executives.

    Dr. Sidle is currently engaged in scholarly activities focusing on leading change, employee surveys, job motivation and job stress. He has published and presented research in the areas of leadership styles, workplace humor, gender stereotypes and job motivation. In addition to teaching and research, he consults to a wide range of organizations in the areas of change management, training and performance evaluation. He is a card carrying member of the Academy of Management, The Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the ACLU. 

    When not at work Dr. Sidle is usually spending time with his wife and two little boys. He is obsessed with political news and finding excellent pizza, (he is quite impressed with New Haven pizza).

    Publications and Presentations

    Dr. Sidle’s research interests include the impact of leadership behavior on worker job satisfaction and job stress; leadership assessment and development; employee surveys, work place humor; and stereotyping in the personnel selection process. He has published in such journals as the Academy of Management Executive, Academy of Management Perspectives, Organizational Research Methods, the Journal of Applied Social Psychology and the Journal of Business and Psychology. And he has presented his research at national conferences including the American Psychological Association (APA), Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and the Academy of Management (AOM).
