Frank GriffelProfessor Frank Griffel studied philosphy, Arabic literature, and Islamic studies at universities in Gottingen (Germany), Demascus, Berlin and London; he received his Ph.D. about the development of the judgment of apostasy in classical Islam in 1999 from the Free University in Berlin.

In 2000, Griffel joined Yale where he teaches courses on the intellectural history of Islam, its theology and the ways Islamic thinkers react to Western Modernity. He has published widely in the field of Arab and Islamic philosophy, Sharia/Islamic Law, Kalam (Islamic Theology), Islamic Political Thought, Avicenna, Averroes, Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (d. 1111), Ibn Taymiyya, Islamic Studies, Philosophy, Epistemology, Middle East (Area Studies), Jewish kalam, Maimonides, Mu'tazilities, Medieval Islam, and Inetellectural and social history of the Mamuluk Period.
