Supervised internships, available in a wide variety of settings, are a major vehicle through which students in the Community Psychology program develop applied skills. Students typically spend six months or more in an internship, gaining experience in at least two of the following areas:
- Individual Intervention: Students work directly with clients on a one-to-one and/or small-group basis, building clinical, case-management, and client-advocacy skills.
- Consultation: Students develop projects that enhance their skills in providing training and education to human service professionals.
- Systems Intervention: Students engage in one or more of the following: program planning and initiation, establishment of new organizational structures or networks, and community organizing.
In the Community Psychology program, we strive to individualize internship experiences, so that they are responsive to the student’s professional goals and background. Students plan their internships in collaboration with both the Community Psychology program coordinator and their supervisor from the internship setting. The Greater New Haven area is extraordinarily rich in settings that offer opportunities for high-quality training in community psychology.
