The University of New Haven Department of Athletics would like to congratulate the 2008 Charger Softball team for their impressive run in the NCAA Division II Softball Northeast Regional Championships.
The Chargers came into the double-elimination tournament as the number eight seed as they faced #9 C.W. Post in the first round. A tough 8-7 loss to the Pioneers sent UNH to the consolation bracket where they fought back to the regional final game.
In the consolation bracket the Chargers knocked out four higher seeded teams, including two ranked nationally, on their way to a rematch with C.W. Post. UNH first eliminated #17 Georgian Court 2-0 and followed with victories over sixth-seeded Bryant University (5-1) and fourth-seeded #23 Caldwell College (3-0).
On the final day of the tournament the Chargers defeated second-seeded Le Moyne College 2-0 setting up a fifth meeting with the Pioneers of C.W. Post. Unfortunately for UNH the fifth time was not the charm as their playoff run came to an end.
The second place finish in the regional tournament is the deepest a Charger softball team has gone in the postseason since 1995, when they advanced to the regional final in a four-team bracket.
