BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- Starting pitcher Breanne Gleason earned the victory with her third consecutive complete game, including her second of the day on Saturday, to power eighth-seeded University of New Haven past fourth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Caldwell College, 3-0, in the 2008 NCAA Division II Softball Championships Northeast Regional at C.W. Post.
UNH (28-20) is now one of the final three teams remaining at the Regional, and will play second-seeded Le Moyne College at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday in an elimination game for both teams. The winner will advance and must defeat top-seeded C.W. Post, which has not lost at the Regional, twice in a row.
Gleason was outstanding in the circle for the third game in a row since a disastrous outing against C.W. Post on the opening day of the Regional. Since giving up eight runs to the Pioneers in just 1 2/3 innings on Wednesday, Gleason has bounced back to allow one unearned run in 21 innings with 23 strikeouts, just nine hits and eight walks.
Jordanna Borska (photo) blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to give the Chargers the lead for good as they eliminated Caldwell (35-22), which was ranked 23rd nationally in the NFCA poll released on May 7.
UNH added a single run in the bottom of the third when freshman Chelsea Harold led off with an infield single to third base and later beat out a relay throw following a Gleason single up the middle.
In Saturday's second game, Gleason struck out just two batters but allowed only three hits and one walk in seven innings. Jessica Medina was 2-for-3 with a run while six other players had one hit each.
Caldwell's best chance came in the sixth inning, when they had bases loaded on three straight batters (walk, single, hit-by-pitch) before Gleason recovered to get outs from the number three, four and five hitters to end the threat.
