WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- University of New Haven Director of Athletics Deborah Chin announced the hiring of Manuel Oliveira as assistant men's soccer coach. He begins his duties at UNH immediately, serving as assistant to head men's soccer coach Joshua Krusewski.
Oliveira returns to the University of New Haven, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Marketing in 1999. He played varsity soccer at UNH in 1994 and part of 1995 before an injury curtailed his playing career. He will assist the program in recruiting student-athletes as well as on-field coaching.
Since 2006, Oliveira has served as the head assistant coach at Division I Quinnipiac University in nearby Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats finished 9-2-5 in 2007, winning five straight matches to open the season and nine of their first 10 overall. That record was a remarkable turnaround from 2006's 1-12-4 record. Prior to his post at QU, he was a head assistant coach with Post University from 2004-05. He has also been the lead assistant at Naugatuck High School.
"Manny’s ability to identify and recruit student athletes, as well as develop game plans, played a vital role in the reemergence of the Quinnipiac University men’s soccer program," Krusewski said. "We are thrilled that he has chosen to come back his alma mater as an assistant coach."
Currently, Oliveira serves as the Goalkeeper Coach for Connecticut's U-14 Girls Olympic Development Program. In addition, he is an assistant coach with the New England Mutiny women's professional team.
“I am very happy to be back at my alma mater," Oliveira said. "It’s a pleasure to work at a university which has such high standards for both academics as well as athletics. I am also looking forward to working with Coach Krusewski, who is well on his way to bringing the program back to regional power that it deserves.”
Oliveira holds a national D Coaching License and has worked at camps at Quinnipiac as well as with Joe Machnick's Number 1 Camp and with Academica Futebol Club. He is a 1994 graduate of Holy Cross High School in Waterbury.
