WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of New Haven held its Athletics Awards Banquet on Sunday, April 27 at Charger Gymnasium, where over 200 student-athletes were honored for their participation in 2007-08. The event culminated with the announcement that senior James Beaubrun (cross country/track & field) and Selina Moylan (soccer) were chosen as the UNH Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively.

More than 400 people attended the event, including student-athletes, coaches, administrators, parents, friends and UNH faculty & staff members.  The event was presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and hosted by the SAAC's Executive Board. SAAC President John Nolan (men's soccer) gave the opening remarks and commented on all of the positive contributions that UNH student-athletes have made in 2007-08.

The awards presentation began with the handing out of the senior academic achievement awards for seniors with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better during their careers.

Next, the coaches of each team stepped to the podium to briefly recap their season, present their four-year award winners with their senior portraits, and then name the winners of the team's sportsmanship and MVP awards. (See complete list of winners below)

UNH faculty members Chuck Vigue and Ed Todd presented the night's major academic honors, the Women's and Men's Faculty Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Awards. This award is given to a male and female student-athlete who has achieved success both academically and athletically, has shown commitment to the University community, and has interacted in a positive manner with their professors.

The Women's Faculty Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award went to senior Amy Desmarais (women's soccer) and the Men's Faculty Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award went to senior James Beaubrun (cross country and track & field). Desmarais was named to ESPN the Magazine's Second Team All-District and the ECC Women's Soccer Honor Roll. Beaubrun was also selected to the ECC Honor Roll for Cross Country.

The final awards presented were the UNH Male and Female Athlete of the Year. These awards are chosen from the team MVP's, and the criteria the selection committee considers are: Athlete’s season highlights; the student-athlete’s leadership qualities; and the impact that the student-athlete has had on his or her team.

The UNH Male Athlete of the Year was cross country and track & field senior James Beaubrun. He was a First Team All-East Coast Conference selection and had a strong showing at the Regional level as well in cross country.  Beaubrun finished 5th at the ECC Championships and placed 26th at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships this fall.  He led the Chargers to a 7th place finish at the Northeast Regional meet and to a No. 7 ranking in the final Northeast rankings.  Not only an athletic achiever, Beaubrun has also been named to the Dean’s List multiple times and was on the ECC’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.  He serves as captain of the cross country and track & field teams.

The UNH Female Athlete of the Year was women's soccer junior Selina Moylan. Moylan was the East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection for the third consecutive season.  She also represented UNH at the national level by earning All-America honors for the third year in a row.  This fall, she was a Second Team All-American and was named the Northeast Region Player of the Year.  She ranked 17th in the nation in points per game and 22nd in goals per game this fall.  Moylan is the only three-time All-American in program history, and holds the school record for career assists.  She is also third all-time at UNH in points and fourth all-time in goals scored.
