Dr. Richard H. Ward has accepted appointment as Dean of the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven effective mid-summer 2008.
Dr. Ward comes to the University of New Haven with strong experience in academic and higher education leadership positions. He will come to UNH from his current role as Associate Vice President for Research and Special Programs at Sam Houston State University. Previously, Dr. Ward served as Dean of Criminal Justice at SHSU and as Associate Chancellor for Special Programs and for 16 years as Vice Chancellor for Administration at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has also served as Vice President and Dean of Graduate Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Dr. Ward earned the Doctor of Criminology degree and a Master of Criminology degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and his Bachelor of Science degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. He has published numerous books and journal articles, has successfully garnered more than $10 million in grants throughout his career, and continues to be actively involved in the criminal justice professional and academic communities throughout the world. We are indeed fortunate to secure the services of a very accomplished leader for the Henry C. Lee College.
Dr. Ward will assume the leadership of the Henry C. Lee College from Dr. Tom Johnson who will be retiring this summer after having served 14 years as the founding dean of the college and working with his faculty in building a strong college with quality academic programs in criminal justice, forensic science, fire science, national security, and legal studies. Special thanks go to the search committee--chaired by Lynn Monahan and including Deborah Everhart, Robert Massicotte, Ron Nowaczyk, Tim Palmbach, Fred Smith, and Bill Tafoya-for its outstanding work throughout this process.
