Pandemic Peril
The Summer Institute is a week long Biotechnology and Science Academy offered by the UNH College of Arts & Sciences. Participants in the program experience the excitement of working with Biotechnology, genetic engineering and science projects in a University Environment. UNH faculty and staff lead a variety of activities, from analyzing DNA and transforming bacteria to performing PCR, and Gel Electrophoresis.
Participants will have an opportunity to learn about careers in Biotechnology through these hands-on activities while getting a taste of college life. UNH faculty and staff supervise all classroom and project work. They have out- standing backgrounds in many different areas of biotechnology, biology, and science, combined with a genuine interest in working with young people who show an aptitude for science, math, engineering, and technology.
Discover life after the end of the world this summer with hands on laboratory experiences and research practices in the following areas:
• Learning and practicing techniques real researchers use in a laboratory
• DNA Extraction
• Gel Electrophoresis
• Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
• Transforming a bacterium with engineered DNA
Biotechnology Institute participants will have the opportunity to sample their own DNA! With this they will move on to recognize and fight an emerging epidemic in our society.
Students will model vaccine development cutting and comparing viral DNA samples looking for new epidemic variations. They will then use PCR and bacterial transformation to model emerging vaccine production techniques. Participants will work together to explore epidemiology techniques, understand how epidemics turn into pandemics and come up with plans to contain the epidemic and distribute the new vaccine.
This course will teach techniques that will look impressive on a college application, supplement an AP Bio course, and give participants a chance to work like real scientists.
