Seamless Five-Year B.S./M.S. in Electrical Engineering

BS/MS Program in Electrical Engineering

Introduction
The advancements in the engineering profession require successful engineers to have additional breadth and depth beyond the bachelor's degree. The master's degree is slowly becoming the entry level degree into the profession. A seamless transition to MSEE degree gives students a competitive advantage and an opportunity to complete both degree programs in five years.

Program Objectives
To attract top undergraduate students in to our programs who have the potential to be involved in research early and to allow them to earn credit towards both degrees simultaneously. The program creates an official path for recruiting our own undergraduates into the graduate program and offers those top students a substantial benefit for their extra effort.

Catalog Description
The combined BS/M.S path affords the opportunity to qualified UNH students from Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCEN) degrees to continue to Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering and complete both degree programs in five years. Qualified students from UNH BSEE and BSCEN degrees will have a smooth transition into MSEE degree with no application fee and minimal paper work for admission. Once in this path, student will be allowed to register for at least two graduate courses or two cross listed courses in their senior year. While these courses will fulfill the undergraduate degree requirements, they will be used to wave certain requirements (up to six credits) in MSEE degree.

Procedures

  • Upon being provisionally admitted to the MSEE program and prior to the start of the student's senior year of study, the student will meet with his faculty advisor, whose professional interests match those of the student, to plan an individual program of study. With the approval of the Graduate Coordinator, a student may select EE603, EE650, or M 611, if admitted to MS in Electrical Engineering option or two of the following -EE610, EE656, EE658, EE682- if admitted to the Computer Engineering option to be used as technical electives in the student's bachelor's degree. The selected courses will be waved in the student's master's program. Once in the program a student should maintain full-time status. The Master's application fee is waived. Seniors admitted into the combined BS/MS program will be eligible for teaching and research assistantships upon matriculation into the graduate program.
  • In many instances, however, this accelerated approach to education will not be the most desirable route, and the student will benefit more by broadening the undergraduate experience before taking graduate courses. The best approach will be determined by each student in consultation with the academic advisors.

Admission Policy to BS/MS Program

  • Students interested in this program should contact the MSEE Graduate Coordinator during the last term of their junior year or promptly after the completion of that semester.
  • The student must be matriculated in the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCEN) degree with a grade point average of at least 3.0, having completed the BSEE or BSCEN worksheets through the junior year.
  • The student must satisfy the Gradate School admission requirements for a master's degree in Electrical Engineering, excluding the completion of a bachelor's degree.
  • Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA through completion of the undergraduate degree program.

Benefits to students

  • M.S. degree is frequently viewed as the "working degree" for many engineers. Typical salaries for students with M.S. degrees are about 25% higher than those with B.S. degrees and students with a M.S. degree have a wider range of and more attractive career opportunities from which to choose. They also tend to be promoted sooner than those who have not completed graduate level degrees,
  • Opportunity to finish M.S. requirements in one year.
  • Early decision process that eliminates uncertainty at graduation,
  • No hassle admission into Masters Degree program. No additional documents beyond requirements stated above.
  • Application fee is waived for MS degree.
  • Qualified students may receive RA/TA appointments with a stipend and reduced tuition and fees upon matriculation into the graduate program.
  • Opportunity for qualified students to finish their M.S. requirements in approximately one year.
  • Maintain all financial aid/loan packages during the duration of the combined MS/BS degree program
  • Gain research experience by working with research faculty
