How do I get an account ?
When new faculty network accounts are created a UNH email address is also created with the same username and password. The creation of any network account requires that an online network account form be submitted to the Office Information Technology. Please contact your department secretary for more information.

How can I read my email ?
Users can check their UNH email by using either the University's web-based email interface or by using a mail client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora or Entourage.

To access the web-based email, usere can go directly to http://unhmail.newhaven.edu/ and when prompted, enter their network username and password.

To use a mail client, use the following mail servers:
    pop3: pop.newhaven.edu
IMAP: imap.newhaven.edu – SSL is offered and preferred.
smtp: ironport.newhaven.edu, Port 26 – SMTP authentication is required. Use your full email address and UNH network password

Is there a limit to the size of my email account ?
Mailboxes are set to warn users when they reach 70MB is size and do not allow users to send emails once their mailbox reaches 80MB.  Users will still be able to receive emais if they are beyond the 80MB limit, but will not be able to send.  It is suggested that emails with large attachments be saved and the original message be deleted.

Can I forward my UNH email account to another email address ?
Users can set their UNH email to forward to an outside account.  The University cannot be responsible for messages that are not received due to spam filters or other rules.  "Download PDF here..."

Is there a spam filter on the email server ?
UNH uses spam-filtering appliances to scan all incoming mail sent to to University users.  Once a day at approximately 3:00pm, users that have received items marked as spam within the last 24 hours will be sent a notification email from "Admin Junk Summary" listing those emails.  The user has the ability to review the items blocked as spam and to 'unjunk' any false positives.  The act of unjunking an email will automatically add the sender to the users's 'allowed' list of senders.

Users can view the contents of their Junk Box and unjunk messages at any time by going to https://ironport.newhaven.edu:83 and logging in using their network username and password.

What can I do to cut down on the spam I receive ?
There are several things that users can do to help decrease the amount of spam they receive.

1.  Do not use your UNH email address to sign-up for non-work-related mailing lists.  Mailing lists are often sold to other "advertisers" which then send unsolicited emails.

2.  NEVER reply to a piece of spam or use an 'unsubscribe' link to request that you be taken off a spammer's mailing list.  Oftentimes, these links are used simply as a way to confirm that the email address they are sending to is valid.

Is there virus protection on the email server ?
The university scans emails for viruses in two locations.  All mail originating outside the university is scanned when it passes through the anti-spam devices at the gateway.  If a message has an attached virus, it is either cleaned and delivered or quarantined.  Quarantined messages are listed in the user's Junk Box but cannot be unjunked.

The scanned external emails are then passed to our internal mail servers where they are scanned again, along with all internal emails.  A different anti-virus package is used at this point to provide greater redundancy.  Once again, if a message has an attached virus, it is cleaned and delivered whenever possible but if it is determined to be uncleanable, the attachments is stripped from the message.
