Poetry Reading Featuring Frank x Walker and Lita Hooper
This event is free and open to all students, faculty, employees and general public
Lita Hooper is a poet, playwright and educator. She is the author of two chapbooks, Legacy and Perspectives, and a critical biography, Art of Work: The Art and Work of Haki Madhubuti (2006) Her work has also been published in journals, anthologies, and magazines. Ms. Hooper's collection of poems, Thunder in Her Voice: The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, was recently published by Willow Books (2010). She is an associate professor of English at Georgia Perimeter College.
Frank X Walker is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and Spalding University. He is a founding member of the Affrilachian Poets, he is a Cave Canem fellow, the contributing editor of Eclipsing a Nappy New Millennium and America! What's My Name: The Other Poets Unfurl the Flag. He is the author of five poetry collections: Black Box (Old Cove Press, 2005); Buffalo Dance: the Journey of York (University of Kentucky Press, 2003), winner of the Lillian Smith Book Award; Affrilachia (Old Cove Press, 2000), When Winter Come: The Ascension of York (University Press of Kentucky 2008) and Isaac Murphy: I Dedicate This Ride (Old Cove Press, 2010). He is also the editor and publisher of PLUCK! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts & Culture. Among his many honors is a Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry. The University of Kentucky awarded Walker an honorary Doctorate of Humanities in 2001 for his collective community work and artistic achievements. Transylvania University awarded Walker an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 2002. The former Executive Director of Kentucky's Governor's School for the Arts, currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Kentucky.
